The Squad planning thread

starting to believe more and more with each day that club's all focus past year has been off the pitch, the club is waiting for a verdict before making any moves and all the income from sales goes straight to the legal battles, hopefully it will get resolved asap
 
Outgoings for summer:

If we have any power over triggering Gundo's 2nd year, we shouldn't trigger it.

Walker needs desperate selling. Should already be working on it.

I think we need to sell one of our most injury prone CB's tbh, Stones maybe a legend and an icon but he makes it hard for everyone and gives dias/gvardiol/akanji no break by his constant unavailability over a long period of time. i would sell stones or Ake who is developing similar issues.

I think we need a goalscoring winger desperately, none of grealish/Savio/doku have enough goals in them. Maybe Bobb does we'll see. But we need Sterling/Mahrez numbers from someone. Need to sell one to make space for that type of player. I would sell grealish.

i assume Ortega will ask to leave if ederson renews. One of the GK's will go.

I think one of Kovacic and Nunes needs to be sold to make way for a top top 6/8 hybrid. They are good players, but not WC players and that's what we need. Would sell Nunes personally.

This assumes Bernardo doesnt ask to leave again, or haaland doesnt stir up trouble as he nears the back half of his contract.

You can’t blame them either. If we are charged it could make life even more difficult with a load of new players.

We win it I expect us to spend big & refresh the squad to last us 5/7 years

that also explains why there aren't new contracts for our key players hasn't been signed, they all waiting for a result

1 x goalkeeper (assuming Carson goes)

In the short term, we have to invest, or put faith in the academy.

I’d keep:
Ederson, Ortega-Moreno
Akanji, Aké, Dias, Gvardiol
Rodri
Bobb, Foden, Savinho
Haaland

I’d sell/end:
Carson
Lewis, Stones, Walker, Wilson-Esbrand (keeping Stones as long as we can)
Kovačić
De Bruyne, Gündoğan
Doku, Grealish, McAtee, Nunes, BSilva

I’d buy:
Centre half, right back
Defensive midfielder
Central midfielder
3 attacking midfielders/wingers
Striker
…and supplement the rest of the squad with youngsters.


We have seen this level of investment in the team before:

2009-2011 we signed Tevez, Barry, Lescott, de Jong, Džeko, Yaya, DSilva, Milner, Agüero, Nasri (with a fair few who weren’t as good, of course). Who were the backbone to winning two PL titles, an FA Cup and an EFL Cup, and a few still huge in the Centurions and Fourmidables.

2015-2017 we signed De Bruyne, Sterling, Otamendi, Stones, Sané, Gündoğan, Laporte, Walker, BSilva, Ederson (with a fair few who weren’t as good, of course). Who were the backbone to the Centurions and Fourmidables seasons, and a few still huge in the Treble and four-in-a-row seasons.

The squad feels like it is ready for that next big investment drive over the next few years.

Twas a joke - doubt we'd look at it as I can't see Pep taking on another no9. However, Haaland can't play every minute of every game & the onus on him to do that so far this season has shown in him looking absolutely shattered in quite a few games. There are also games where Haaland is ineffectual and having an option would be useful.

All our youth that left lately are performing well for their clubs.

Could have been the depth we needed all along considering our aging squad.
