The Squad planning thread

Out: Bernardo, KDB, Gundogan, Kovacic, Grealish, Ederson and Ortega ( most likely both GK). Just taking space at this point.

Death wish, that. Some will probably go, but not before Phillips, Nunes, Carson for example. KDB and Gundo might go, or be willing to join the coaching team. Grealish will only go if we get decent money, and I can’t see both GKs leaving. Kovacic must stay for another season at least, even if he gets less game time. Bernado is still an asset, though not as much as previously. We do need to be careful and not throw the baby out with the bath water.

In my opinion, the biggest reason we need to let so many players go is not just that they're not good enough any more. It's to remove the ability for Pep to select them.

Remove the temptation to go back his ex and he'll start to move forward.
I am torn. Of course Viana and pep will be close and on the same page (I hope)

But Txiki was as close as you can get to Pep and perhaps sometimes that clouded his judgement?

Viana doesn't owe Pep anything so can he be more objective and do his own thing without any background thought of what Pep would do.?

Ultimately Viana doesn't report to Pep, he reports to the board and if they want to clear big wages and bring in youngsters then that is what his mission statement is. Be up to Viana to hold firm and not authorise contracts for Gundogan and Kdb etc if that's where we end up.

Nonsense to get rid of the old guard. They won us the CL 21 months ago. Players don’t drop off like that. It’s down to playing well consistently which brings confidence, fluidity, rhythm and whatever other buzzwords that fit. Obvs players will be replaced. But we can’t disrespect the players who gave us the best moments of our lives. Walker, Phillips’s, Perrone are the only certainties to leave. Why bin off Ake, stones, etc when this year we had to call up Simpson and Braithwaite because we had such a thin squad. There’s going to be a huge experience hole in 2026 when stones, gundo, Bernardo, KDB (if not this year), Ederson, Ortega and mcatee if he doesn’t go to leverkusen. Then in 2027 a raft more including Grealish, Ake Akanji. These are hugely valuable assets when it comes to know how. Let’s be honest it’s unlikely any off these players will get an extension, so we need these players to rub off on the new ones. No other players in our history, have achieved as much as them. They have the experience and medals to show any newbies that come in, how it’s done. We can’t just fuck them off. They’re legends and should be treated as such.

What youre saying is literally what we did this past summer, kept the legends and old guard and hows that working out? This whole squad needs a massive refresh

Good. We will play Europe league next season then. I mean the squad has to do a united and keep all this players just for the sake of it. We literally did it this season already. Why would the team keep 5-6 players who just can’t offer anything anymore even from the bench? The problem here is also that Pep will continue to use them just because he is close to them.

Viana will be here long term , not sure Pep will be, next season could be his last and if things get worse in the next 2 months that could come sooner.

Viana has to be THE man this summer, his watch, his players, he looks to have had a major influence on the January window and for me that was our best window for some time.

If we keep this hem we drop further away and in the end the legacies of these players will be tarnished but at least we can live if our past trophy’s and become the new Man Utd .

De Bruyne and Gundogan will stay.
I agree.

But on massively reduced roles. Gundo will basically become a player coach and Kev of the bench.

Think Stones and Grealish are done. Think Ake and Bernie stay, unless someone finally comes in for him. Walker is going to AC, McAtee will probably move, GK is hard because we might need 3 new players there, can’t see Lewis going anywhere, Nunes probably goes, Kov probably goes.

Absolute nonsense in my opinion. We are where we are because of the old guard. Perhaps if we’d have sold them when they peaked we’d have got some decent money to spend on replacements. Instead we kept them all, flogged them even more to death, sold Alvarez for £81m and still could only get Gundogan in on a free. We’ve stood still since the CL win (barring the most recent window) and look where we are. We’ve got too many players on £200k a week or more who simply can’t cope with the pace of the game anymore. It’s like flushing money down the toilet.

So? Last year we did what no other team has done. Yes we took that team as far as it could go and this was a season too far. If you can't take one off season after the last 7 years before starting again that's your problem. I'm relaxed this season and excited to see the next stage.

I think Gundogan will leave and join Galatasaray personally.

If I recall, their president has openly spoke about him being a player they want in the summer and it's his boyhood club apparently.

KDB will leave. The club won't be giving him £150k a week to come off the bench, and I think the club will finally learn about being over sentimental about legend players and realise that going forward we have to let him go for the best.

4 of the top 6 highest paid players in the entire Premier League are Haaland(£525k), KDB(£400k), Bernardo(£300k) and Grealish (£300k).

Haaland will obviously stay, but the rest will be pushed to leave in my opinion as the club will want those wages for the rebuild.
