The Squad planning thread

Nunes only inherited the right-back spot because Walker chose to leave, and if he hadn't chosen to go, then given Guardiola's reliance on experience, I doubt he'd ever have played there.

Regards RB, i think Pep will see Nunes as the offensive option and Akanji as the go to for the big games. Maybe even Khusanow in the defensive role. Lewis as back up.
I can live with those options. If everywhere else is sorted.
But if everywhere else is sorted, why should we persist with square pegs in round holes at right back? We've been handicapping ourselves thus for seasons.

If we're going into next season with Nunes as our RB I'll be massively disappointed and slightly worried. His meltdown at the end of the home game against the Rags cost us that game

Pep always likes that, we’ve had no left back under Pep. I think he sees something in Nunes and I tend to agree.

That's just not true, though. We had Walker and Mendy, both under long contracts. Unfortunately, injury robbed us of the latter. Subsequently, he had to make do and mend, but the inability to field proper fullbacks in both positions has often seen us imbalanced and left us vulnerable, especially in knock out competitions.

So far at left back under Pep he’s used Delph early, then a combination of Ake etc. Mendy was wank from
the moment he tore his ACL in about his 5th game.
He’s always liked to shoehorn in a player.

I’d love the best RB in the world, but I can’t think of anyone that suits us right now.

Hakimi is the best RB in the world and would suit us down to the ground , but we have more chance of platting fog than signing him Unfortunately

If we can't keep Stones fit at CB, we have no chance at RB.

Your team is spot on though, I think that's how we line up next year but with a flying right back.
Not so sure it’s flying right back we want., and really if we are targeting Livramento he’s more suited to playing the inverted role than the flying role. Pep could quite easily play Ait Nouri attacking on the left and an inverted right back.Even with Mendy and Walker, Walker often played more inverted than attacking.
Plus we can always keep Nunes for thae attacking fullback role if we want to use that sometimes.

We laboured for years without one and played makeshifts in there, Zinchenko included, which was fine domestically in the league, but we were frequently targeted there in European games. We'd all like the best in the world, but I'd honestly just settle for the best we can get.

Once Cherki is over the line do we think we are done with attacking signings? I'm not sure myself.
I think we are done with all incomings now unless we shift a load out and someone special becomes available.

I’m sure we have some money left re PSR though.

@slbsn will know.

Yeah I can see that!

I do personally think we are going to see Pep permanently move away from the inverted fullback option though.

Only to see out games can I see us utilising it.

I said in the English league not English players.
Another poster who likes to twist posts.
Cash,Timber,White,Veltman,James,
Aina,Munoz,Porro,Semedo,Arnold,Bradley and I could throw in Trippier who is still better and that is without going through every team .
Nunes is not a full back and never will be.
I will not fault him for the effort he put in but he was purely a stop gap because of injuries, Rico lack of form and the Walker situation.
Shocked nobody talks about Djed Spence

I'm suspecting we don't get a RB.

I bet we are happy with Nunes progression as an offensive option.

And for a defensive option, Akanji and Khusanov can easily do that role.

I actually look at Khusanov, and think, why can't he have a transformation like Jules Kounde, who was always a CB then turned into a RB at Barca (and he moaned about it lol), had some slight growing pains, but now suits that role perfectly.

Kounde makes a back 3, goes in midfield, and supports the winger, and his physicality and quality lets him do all of it, he is the perfect player for Barca to balance the super offensive ability of the LB (Balde).

Khusanov has that physical ability hands down, I'd like to see if he can develop more comfortability on the ball, and overlap and cross if he needs to, I don't see why he can't develop those traits, still so young.

I'm fairly certain we play a sort of 4231 with 1 fullback wide, 1 more flexible.

In 1 set up, O Reilly can inverted from LB (he can also play wide of course) with Nunes wide, or Khusanov invert from RB and Ait Nouri wide.
