The Squad planning thread

We seem to have a fetish for signing lower cost players who might turn out good in the future.

That's all well and good when you're adding them to a currently great team, but not so much when you're not actually a great team right now.

Sometimes you've got to bite the bullet and pay the premium for the better players.
Like we should of bought Wirtz instead of Cherki, don't think so. Lower cost doesn't always mean worse, in fact they're are often better.

I guarantee you that Wirtz will have a better career than Cherki - as he has thus far.

Saying lower cost often = far better is a bit of a far out statement as well.

A lot of our better players over the years were bought for substantial fees which were considered large for the time.

Obviously there are gems to be had but ultimately higher quality leads to a bigger cost.

It’s not a fetish, it’s exactly what you would expect from the most dominant club in the world for the past decade.

How about letting the current crop grow together and be a great team.

Or sometimes the so called better players don’t want to join, and that’s ok. Some here can’t accept it.

Sorry mate, no guarantees of that at all.

You can't guarantee anything, we'll see.

If you believe that you’re either thinking that Cherki won’t make it here or City will get worse. We haven’t even seen a fully integrated Cherki and he’s already got 5 GA. Wirtz has played at least double the minutes and still looks he’s never met slot before

'Guarantee' is going overboard, and I actually think Wirtz is playing better than he's being credit for. His workrate is excellent and he's obviously good, I don't think they've quite worked out his role yet.

But Cherki clearly has talent too. Lots of it.

Think our squad is in a pretty good spot, it may not look as strong as Arsenal's but think it's still exciting

Donanruna is world class

Gvardiol is a top class centre back, jsut need to keep him away from LB

Khusanov ceiling is great

O'Reilly may not be natural at LB but hes a talent

I'm a big Nico fan, think he looks class

Cherki/Foden have world class talent, they need to become team leaders

Haaland is the best CF in the world

Doku, Savinho & Bobb all have something to prove, hoping at least one can make it to world level

We need some quality, but it's not that bad

I'm enjoying watching some home grown talent on the pitch personally

We bought the best midfielder in Serie A over the summer.

But it's a weird market. No English club has to sell to us, there isn't exactly a wealth of world class talent knocking about, and everything seems absurdly overpriced.

So why aren't we playing well? We have dropped 11 points thus far out of 27. Either the players aren't as good as you say or the manager isn't getting the best out of them.

Arsenal have had five years together more or less, and their team is currently peaking, and we have just majorly overhauled the most successful squad in the history of English football. It's not football manager or FIFA.

We have also had no pre-season, a clutch of new players to acclimate, and a host of frustrating injuries. All of the above have made Guardiola’s task harder, as he juggles the squad to get as many fit and in form as possible. We have talented players in abundance but might not see signs of consistent form until January, so we just have to hope we remain in contention until then.
My only quibble with Guardiola is that he still hasn’t found a solution to playing without a recognised 6- tinkering simply leaves us sub-optimal, so we need to accept that and return to the market.

most of the teams in club world cup didnt have proper pre-season and some of these are playing some excellent football with really good players. Not really an excuse i think ,i honestly think that a lot of our current players just aren´t good enough to get this team back to the top of the world.

Chelsea won it and are still equally inconsistent.

It all rather depends on when you want to be at the peak again. We made mistakes in squad management after winning both the treble and then again after winning four back-to-back titles. We’ve learned from those and now decided to build a larger, younger squad of players to help us reascend, but it won’t happen immediately. However, once we do reach the peak, and we will, we will still have a comparatively younger squad and will refresh accordingly so that our presence on all three fronts (domestic, European, and international) is sustained.

Will these younger players ever be good enough or need another great summer window? I think the latter one. Full backs and wingers are still a huge concern.
