My take after several slow-mo analyses:
Cahill came in to the side of Vinnie with only his left leg, tho' not leading with his toe. His foot went over the ball then down.
You can see the second Cahill goes down to slide, Vince's left foot is already in the air, leg turning slightly. Clearly he was going for the block. His foot doesn't change trajectory, his eyes stay on the ball. Vinnie's L foot comes down on Cahill's L as Cahill takes VK for a ride, wiping him off both feet (VK doesn't even have time to jump up). Vinnie's arms go up, weight was on the weight baring leg (right) and going back-clearly he's falling. If he meant to stamp down on him, his weight would be forward, and to his left. Really, Vinnie should've fallen on top of Cahill but appears to try and maneuver himself.
It was Cahill's millisecond decision that did them both in. IMHO, he would've reached the ball 1st if he hadn't stopped/braked & just remained upright. But seeing the train that is Kompany decided he didn't want to to sacrifice his body. (Just Vinnie's). It was an unnecessary, foolish slide.
Take it a step further, these split second actions are ingrained. Just look at their history.
