Your point ignores the fact that turnover doesn't equal profit. Look at the supermarkets. I believe they work on something like 3% so there isn't any wriggle room. The reason their margins are so low is because of competition between them. If you remove the competition so that margins and then wages improve then prices will go up.


It's called inflation

I worked at next for 5 years.. To say they don't make eye watering profits is ridiculous. And their treatment of staff is abysmal. Go in on a Monday not knowing how many hours you will have that week, some weeks 30 some weeks 8, and I was a student at the time and could barely make do imaging bringing kids up on that.

Retail has always worked that way to cover the long hours and has been traditionally low paid (my daughter works full time as a manager in retail) as I understand it, over 80% of the new jobs created recently have been full time. I am not saying all is well but it is getting better. We are coming from a very dark place back in 2010.
