It's a grown up's forum so what do you hope to achieve by putting asterisks in 'prick'?

Were you hoping that it would be less offensive?

Just out of interest, if the tories are sooooo nasty then why is it the "poor" people living in social housing which you are on about were able in the 80s and 90s to buy their council house in London then sell it for an absolute bomb or as some are, able to rent it out and earn a fortune? Who allowed this to happen? Oh yes Maggie T who apparently hates poor people!

Nail on head , the Socialist doctrine of the State knows best was destroyed with the Right to Buy.

A few facts of life need putting in here to balance things up.

In the real world if YOU want to live in a "Nice" area you pay a premium, thats why similar houses in say Bramhall compared to Moston will have a different price.

Social housing is provided at a subsidy for those not in a position to buy a house, there is NO security as to where that house will be, it will never be YOURS, no matter how long you have lived there unless you buy it, there is no transfer of tenancy to the children, as many people have found out on the death of their parents.

The local council has a duty to manage on a budget, if the land on which houses stand becomes valuable enough to fund building more houses in a cheaper area then thats basic sense, because it provides more houses for people who can not afford to buy an that is its job.

Its not there to ensure aunt Mavis lives around the corner from her bingo hall, but that she has a f*cking roof over her head.

Read the whole thread and this deserves a repost

Not agreeing with the posts saying RTB was Baroness Thatchers con trick, you are implying people in social housing didn't have free will, they did, no one forced them to buy their council house (as they were called at the time)

Having read this thread I find it astounding that the left wingers on this forum have the audacity to call the right wingers nut jobs!

The left wingers on this forum seem to have panicked into going on to the offensive (in all senses of the word) as the impending Election is drawing closer

I feel it is indicative of the fact ,that they are beginning to realize, that the labour party under the leadership Milliband is going to cost them the chance of power for another five years.

By which you seem to imply Labour are socialist well they are not. And the left wingers on hear will vote Labour which many won't. Probably the only reason the voters will vote Labour is to get this mob out. They are the lowest quality government I can remember. Not even talking policy (which could be talked about) just the quality of their way of working, way of selling an argument, way of representation, way if presentation..... They are really amateur! And Labour are similar. We have such low quality professional politicians it's unbelievable! This is where Brands "don't vote" thing comes in .... What is there to vote for? I expect a very low turn out despite the hype this time. You watch them blame Brand. They will never dream to think....... Hold on..... Are we up to standard. It's actually like 4th division level politics. Very poor!

What sort of 'society' would you want to live in, to raise children in? One whereby you can only live in the capital if you're exceptionally wealthy and where social mobility is so stagnant you have very little chance of catching up if you haven't started out wealthy already? One where if you choose a career of social service - such as nurse or fireman - you can't afford to live in a 'decent' area? One where social housing is at its basest level and you ought to be grateful no matter what and if the land the place you pay rent to live becomes more valuable you get shifted - who knows where - and that's simply tough luck for you and yours?

One where only money counts? Healthcare, education, opportunity - prospects for everything dependent upon how much you've got?

That does not appeal to me.

It's not a question of tory or labour. Nor is it a question of workers versus shirkers. It is a question of what type of country you want this one to be.

There seems to be a depressing tendency to shout down any view that is not based on the principle of whatever you have you deserve it. To pre-empt that, I would not consider myself particularly left wing and I have since the 90's paid the upper tax threshold - and I do not consider that punitive; I would like a society that's less individualist, less aggressive, less avaricious and one that has a wider range of values than those that money offers.

Social housing is good for society. Social housing should offer homes, not just shelter.

Excellent post. Well said

agreed.

I completely agree with you about the truly lamentable standard of politicians in this country today. When you look back at some of the intellectual heavyweights across the political spectrum in days gone by it really is quite depressing casting your eyes upon the collection of anodyne career politicians that comprise most of our MP's, many of whom have never had a job outside politics. What sort of boring **** do you have to be to have had a working life like that?
