What plenty of people possibly don’t realise is that it took a while for three points for a win to become standard across world football.
After it was introduced in England, virtually everywhere else stayed on two points for over a decade. It wasn’t until FIFA decided to use three for the 1994 World Cup finals that all the other big leagues (Germany, Spain, Italy etc) decided to change.
