The Title Race - 2024/25

How many points to win the league?

I'm attempting to keep buoyant despite the poor run. I just cannot get over this team being out of the title race on Dec 1st though as some are stating, and I'm not saying they're wrong either. Surely we should be performing better than this, even with our issues within the squad.

Without wishing to sound all 'Happy Clapper', I'd just point out if I may that there are 25 games to go, 75 points to win. And also that anything can happen between now and May. We never give up.

It's true, we need a lot of things to go our way for us to get a fifth title in a row. I think yesterday's game, together with the other results this weekend, will be a watershed moment for us. We're starting to get players back from injury. If we can add to that

(a) an upturn in individual/collective form
(b) Pep stops swanning about re subs
(c) the squad also gets f**king angry

I think we can give it a right good go at taking a fifth on the bounce! Well, at any rate, that's 'Dr Johnnie's' prescription!

We need to get our rhythm back, our swagger and the sooner the better. Come on, boys, start turning it around on Wednesday against Forest.. then let's see how the mop flops at the end of January! As the real Dr John actually put it once:

'It's about knowing how to make a groove happen and keep it going so others can play off it...'

We're more than capable of doing that..

I usually bite my tongue reading your ass kissing posts but I am only human. Stop acting like you are all pally with City all of a sudden. You are irrelevant. You've won literally one shit cup in 5 years and you talk about Liverpool blowing up? At least we went toe to toe for a while and won some big boy trophies.

City Fwens!!

You make me wanna vomit.
Just because I don't advocate smashing up City's coach or throwing coins at their child fans doesn't mean I'm kissing ass.

For me there's been an inevitable albeit gradual decline and possibly masked by winning the treble in the wrong year.
Not dissimilar to the rags winning the European Cup in 68 after choking with a younger team in 66.

17/18
Best team by a country mile but then Liverpool had a good transfer window (not that they ever mentioned it) so the next season was always going to be closer.

18/19
Arguably our best title, but as a sign of City's depth look no further than the bench for the last game at Brighton: De Bruyne Sane Jesus Stones Danillo
Liverpool prefer to remember the Stones clearance, but equally Mahrez could have made it easier for future City teams at Anfield by burying the hoodoo with his last minute penalty.
Similarly we should have gone deeper in the CL, but after all the VAR drama we sometimes forget Aguero's missed penalty at Tottenham

19/20
We just never got going and Liverpool were out of sight by Christmas

20/21
A totally weird season that ended in anti climax

21/22
A great finish but with weaknesses highlighted at Left Back so everyone assumed that Cucurella was on his way
No Cucurella and three seasons later still no Left Back

22/23
The treble season but possibly aided (certainly in the CL Final) by moments of luck that had previously eluded us

23/24
No outstanding teams, but despite an appalling performance at Villa Park we somehow made less mistakes than our rivals.

For now we just need to concentrate on beating Forest.

The league is over for us. It's natural that we still cling to a bit of hope after how brilliant this team has been. But injuries and fatigue have cost us after 4 amazing years.

I think Chelsea could be dark horses if Liverpool do slip up... but the most realistic outcome from here is that Liverpool will cruise to a comfortable title and finish 5+ points ahead of the nearest challenger.

That's a nice bit of positivity, even if inside I'm snarled up with our recent results. My only concern is the turnaround has to be as stark as our recent collapse, it has to start Wednesday and then sustained for the remainder of the season. Quite a tall order unless there's a fair bit of point dropping from L'pool and possibly Arse.

Know exactly how you feel about the current run.. it is what it is, so we have to deal with it as club, coach, squad and supporters.

I do remember back to around this time in 1967, when having made a good start we lost to Sunderland, The Red Filth and Arsenal on the bounce (with two further defeats over Christmas by The Baggies) and it seemed to be the end of all that early days' promise. However, we got back to winning ways (helped by the arrival of Franny Lee from Bolton.. none of this 'transfer window' nonsense in those days!) and by the end of the season we had pulled it back to win the title in great style!

Optimistic more so than realistic? Probably yes.. but starting on Wednesday, one never knows. If we can sort ourselves out and lift off again, my stars imagine the meltdown among the media and the Red Cartel! Oh please, dear Footballing Gods, let it happen!

Nice memories, before my time as well. I mentioned it a few times but here goes again, halt this slump immediately, starting Wednesday. It's gone on long enough now and regardless of the rationale for it from anyone, this team needs to put it to bed, preferably in style.

I am looking foreward to sky promoting "The Battle Of The Bottlers" between the Dippers & the Tarquins as both clubs try to give each other the Title by dropping points towards the end of the season & we finally get our shit together & nip in last minute to pip them both by a point last game of the season with a controversial last minute goal, well thats what I am hoping for anyway :-)

We were out of the title race on 10th November in 2019-20 after losing 3-1 to Liverpool, and we had a much better team back then.

We scored a shit load of goals that season but lost 9 PL games (including Wolves h+a and Utd h+a… and remember how bad we were at Norwich away early in that season?), and at no point in the season did we look like we’d claw back that gap.

The come down from winning two PL titles in a row at 100 and 98 points, plus a domestic quadruple, was huge. Same as now, we look like we’re on a massive come down from the intensity of four PL titles in a row, plus a quintuple. Once you lose that intensity, it’s not easy to just get back, it takes time and probably a group of new players. Throwing an unprecedented injury crisis n’all (plus poor recruitment) and it’s the [im]perfect storm.

That’s the spirit, now we’re talking!!!!

Our slump has been awful, but 2 were in UCL and 1 in Carabao.
Our form is dire, but if we did beat Forest & United at home, and beat Palace and Villa away in the next 4, we'd actually be 1 point ahead of what we had after 17 games last year, and we finished as champions..
That's mental.
Hard to see us winning any game, let alone all 4, but the current drama would look very different if we were actually ahead of last year's points total.

Bizarrely it started with that game against Spurs that Pep supposedly wasn’t that interested in…..and then he played Stones, Ake and Dias in that game and we haven’t seen all three of them in the same game since. It was that mistake that started the ball rolling. Hindsight and all that but either go for the win fully or don’t bother at all.

Right now, Liverpool don't look like they will drop many points. They are on a good run. That said, the season ends in May and that is 6 months away. A lot can happen in this period of time. Liverpool could implode. It is possible. An injury to VVD or Salah. Who knows? We all base our predictions for the season based on recent form, but form changes over the season. So, in effect everyone is guessing Liverpool will win because of their recent form. 25 games to go. They also have a track record of bottling it. Their early luck will run out.

I'm in agreement with more or less all of this. Will they sustain this form over the season, possible but unlikely. If they can, then fair do's. A long winning run from us looks improbable at this stage though. It's a tall order just to close this gap, let alone anything else. But we need to give ourselves a chance whilst even a glimmer of hope exists. That starts with putting the past month behind us, and getting that run going. Some of those other teams above us will hopefully put pressure on them as well over the winter months.
