The Tottenham Thread 12/13

If you looked at the stats MOTD showed at the end of the game then it was pretty even over the two halves, however if you watched their highlights you'd think the Rags had 75% possession and it was absolutely one sided. MOTD are *****.

you wouldn't be wrong, they had 74% of ball possession (probably some 85% in 2nd half), 14-8 shots, 700-250 passes

http://www1.skysports.com/football/live ... 615/report

they absolutely battered them in 2nd half, I guess taggart went mental in ht as that domination was scary - some other day and we would see that 3-5 comeback again.

I just hope he's not able to motivate them to play that stuff more regularly as most teams would crack to pieces under such pressure, they played like men possessed in large parts of 2nd half, it was close to miracle Spurs made it.

Quote from The Sunday Times yesterday;

'Never, perhaps, have United been as subjugated in a Premier League match in their own stadium as in the first half in which Jan Vertonghen and Gareth Bale stuck for the 2-0.'

Jonathan Northcroft obviously didnt see what happened at O.T. in October last year.

Stats can be deceiving. First half we controlled the game. Second half bar the post and looping header onto the bar, they rarely gave friedel a workout, a few shots were straight at him and miles wide.

BBC stats don't quite show the same on skysports either, I think someone at sky is a United fan

yeah, I've seen some stats showing 62% of possession after I wrote that..

I still think they battered you in second half, not many clear chances but that's because your guys were fighting for their lives in the box.

It was rarely seen domination and on other day I doubt you would do it.

Happy you did though :)

Bacon made a stupid mistake to play Scholes and Giggs together. They didn't have the legs to contain Spurs in that first half. At half-time, Ferguson took off Giggs and United visibly improved.

Interesting spin. United clearly dominated the second half. Last ditch tackes, woodwork and poor finishing cost them. However, the team who scores the most goals is always a deserved winner.

I know there are Spurs fans who hate us as much as they dislike Chelsea and Arsenal - bitterness and envy, I would think. However, I have never met a City fan who prefes United to Spurs. It would not even be close.

tottenham has a lot of tall guys in their team , certainly helped them dealing with all those crosses on saturday

It was almost a text book match in my opinion , opposition taking lead in the 1st half , then sitting back in the second half trying to defend their lead , it's actually the worst thing to do at the swamp . Every once in a while you will suceed but the most likely outcome is a home win , very weird tactics in the second half from villas boas ,

but hey , a win is a win and you actually controlled the 1st half.

-- Mon Oct 01, 2012 3:15 pm --

tottenham has a lot of tall guys in their team , certainly helped them dealing with all those crosses on saturday

It's often just the players to be honest. For almost as many times as you'll see a team sit back and concede the lead at OT, you'll see the manager on the touchline screaming for his players to push up and attack. Some teams just shit themselves.

I agree a lot of players lose their heads. It takes a lot of mental strength to resist prolonged attacks from a team of United's quality. Walker clearly lost his head as did others. However, guys like Sandro, Gallas and Fridel had the strength of character to see them through. There was added pressure since Tottenham always lose at United.

United completely controlled the second half though and if they had finished better would have won. Tottenham's high pressing game cannot be sustained for an entire match and a lot of their players had no legs.

I expected them to come at us second half, I think most did. No one seems to know how to play against united when leading. We sat so deep which was dangerous. It was all them don't get me wrong (second half) but some of van persies and nani's finishing was poor, the way sky are talking as if they had a billion shots. That's a game we normally throw away against them!

I always thought their transfer policy was a bit strange! Should do well in the paralympics, I guess.

Idk about that. I would guess that when teams play an open game there, when leading, United would often come back and score as well. I think after they scored their second goal, if we had kept playing the way we were, with the crowd more energized, we would have definitely conceded again. We might have scored as well, but who knows. In the end, AVB's tactics worked so it's impossible to say it was a bad decision. I would have liked if we had put together more threatening counter attacks toward the end but it looked like our players were pretty exhausted.

When "anticipating contact" goes wrong. Bale and Suarez should both face fines or else this is going to get worse as they think its OK to do it.

3 game bans for what?

3 game ban for diving
4 game ban for racially abusing a player

Bale didn't dive, He was anticipating contact and kind of bottled the challenge and moved his leg away.
