The Tottenham Thread 12/13

I sort of understand some of the reactions from Spurs fans when it comes to the money thing and how it's not quite the same. A few years back they spent a fair wack compared to many others and pushed themselves into contention (didn't they finish just outside CL place 2 seasons on the trot). They carried onto spending a even bigger wack (over 100 million I seem to recall) with Ramos only to sack him early, finish mid-table and bring in Harry who then spent a similar amount himself. One CL run later and not much else to brag about would probably leave them wondering.

What I can't understand though is why people would choose to leave the scene now rather than back then when they started spending heavily, surely it should be the other way around. Unless, that is, it's just a backlash of being overtaken by other clubs and their built up expectations have taken a significant blow?

I think Richie is trying to give the impression he is a real fan and we are not. I think he deserves praise for being better than us. I think I will cry myself to sleep tonight.

We didn't spend anywhere close to 100m with Ramos. In actual fact, our net spend was about
+£35m at the end of that summer. We got about £52m from the sales of Berbatov and Keane alone.

Oh, and Redknapps net spend was actually only £18.9m over the three and a half seasons he was in charge.

No point in complaining about money, if you had not have received huge investment then somebody else would have done. Blackburn, Chelsea, Liverpool, QPR, Leicester, now even Nottingham Forest have all been taken over by billionaires and had massive amounts of money thrown at them. It is a part of the game now. Financial inequality comes in all shapes and sizes, just look at La Liga where the distribution of tv money has pretty much eliminated the possibility of any team apart from Real Madrid or Barca ever competing for the top honours ever again.

What is worse (if it is possible) than some bitter fans who come to post on here bemoaning your lottery win is some of the City fans who seem to deny that you have spent vastly more money than you have made. Some of you act like the office girl who comes in one day having gone from an A cup to an H cup and telling everyone her tits are real.

The fact is you would not be anywhere near where you are now without the 2(!) colossal investors in your club. However, who gives a shit. You get to watch your team win trophies and have great players at the Etihad every week. Fuck the haters, just enjoy it. But equally, don't deny it either.

Ps. If Spurs were bought by a russian oligarch I would dance a jig and then boot up FM to see who we should buy to partner Gotze in midfield ;)

money comes in, it's called income, you spend it, expenditure.

end of the day whether it's from the suits at Sky, the suits at your sponsors, the suits in your corporate facilities, the suits at the FA, the Premier League, the fans or from your owner or shareholders it's money put into the club by someone else.

The only thing that is repugnant is the people who try and claim that for football certain forms of that are morally wrong because of their own personal preferences, if your place of work got taken over tomorrow and you got a payrise you wouldn't care whether it was because of a new owner or because you sold more shit, and funnily enough nobody else would give a damn either, let alone cry wolf.

We "made" money because Sheikh Mansour saw an investment opportunity and invested a hell of a lot of money in us, a far better model than those who borrow money they can't afford like our friends down the road.

it's really not a difficult thing to get your head around.

I'm just surprised the way some fans go on, its like investing in a team regardless of the scale of investment is like some alien concept. The only way to become a force is to spend outside your means. Everton got into the top 4 on a shoe string one year i'm not talking about that i'm talking about finishing number 1. We have had to have 400 million investment just to catch up to United after 25 years and we still just made it past them on goal difference. If you want to be the best you have to start spending more than you can afford and THEN expand on the commercial side to increase revenue with your new more marketable players.

It will be interesting to see Arsenals spending after they pay off their stadium. A 60,000 seater stadium with London ticket prices is a serious amount of wedge. Their gate receipts are way above any other club in the country.

That is true once there sponsorship deals go and they re-negotiate them at much higher prices also they will have a huge turnover and will start spending more and more. They have already spent this window without selling. They also had a decent 50 million investment in the 90s to get them where they are. But yeah I have a feeling there spending will slowly increase in the next 2 years.

I didn't say net spend, I said spend mate. It's like complaining that we've spent all this money without a return. The first return was the FA Cup, the second being the Prem title but when the time comes our third return will also recoup money on our players as well.

You splashed the cash mate, I'm not complaining about it I'm just making a point how it's ironic that people would leave the terraces because of what's happening now but failed to do when it happened then.

Edit: And I do hope this was not aimed at me, at no point did I complain about the money spent, more you trying to defend it for no apparent reason.

I would be highly surprised if the prize money, gate receipts, and increase in merchandise sales comes anywhere close to your initial outlay. Comparing it to Spurs who in a season sold £100m worth of playing staff, and replaced them with £70m of playing staff is ridiculous. Arguably, the value of your squad increased by £400m, whereas ours dropped by £30m in a comparative period. They are in no way comparable.

Ironically I see that Talkshite are now talking about "Tottenham's new found riches" because we've spent £23m so far this summer, even though we've sold £15m worth of players already. I'm seriously starting to think that If your name is not Man Utd, then the media only think you're playing fair if you sign people on a free.

Rumour has it we've sold/are in the process of selling 25% of the club to PSGs owners for £230m. Almost pays for the stadium which is nice :) Makes our valuation about £920m though, which to be honest, looks way off. Thought we'd be more £500m at most tbh. Still, Levy has an incredible knack at taking people's money.
