The Tottenham Thread 12/13

Poor result last night, basle looked very good too. Maybe we underestimated them. Didn't they beat united last season?

I hope bale is ok, with lennon, Defoe, along with sandro injured that's becoming more difficult. Our back ups for the left side rose and Townsend are loaned out too

As for bale he is our best player, but we still have some great players. Lloris, vertonghen, lennon and sandro, the latter two injured as well. If you take everybody's best player of course they will be weak

I'm pretty sure felony and peenarse are suspended for the weekend, sure they picked up bookings at your lot, they will be under strength too so it'll be a tight match

Gotta keep going and hope ade pulls his finger out the arse so we can try reach fourth otherwise it'll be arsenal again, and they will get another easy group in the champions league for being in it so long

As for the second leg its a mountain to climb but not out the realm of possibility, weve beaten Lyon and inter so we can hopefully go there and get something

For the one who mentioned Gallas he mostly plays Europa along with brad, his legs aren't the same anymore but he has been a great product IMO.

Don't go off tonights game.

It's a big game for FC Basle, a nothing game for Spurs. Remeber Athletic Bilbao against Utd last season. They played like world beaters. Different levels of commitment from both sides.

Utter rubbish. AVB, Spurs and their fans are desperate to win the Europa league. Dismissing it as a nothing game is not only wrong but grossly insulting to a Basel team that were very good.
They outplayed Spurs and deserved more than a draw. I'm surprised at you Marvin.

More concerned about finishing fourth or better stony and if AVB and co think that they will be compromised in the league especially now that the injuries are starting to pile up they will not hesitate to field a below strength side in the return leg notwithstanding that Sandro , Bale, Gallas, Lennon , Defoe look likely to miss.

Looks like Bale will only be out for two games - Everton and Basle. Perhaps this is the season that the sun shines on them? Had some good fortune this season. No idea what's going on with Lennon's injury, though.

Tottenham Hotspur host Everton at White Hart Lane on Sunday 7th April 2013 (KO 14:05) in the 32nd round of Premier League matches for the 2012-13 season.

Spurs come into the match in 3rd place in the League on 57 points, while Everton are in 6th place on 51 points

This will be the 171st time the two clubs have met.

The first meeting came in April 1897 in an end of season friendly match at Tottenham Marshes which Spurs won 2-1. Everton were founder-members of the Football League and had just finished 7th in the First Division while Spurs were in the Southern League and had finished 4th.

A further friendly was played at Goodison Park on New Year's Day 1902 which Everton won 3-1.

The clubs' first competitive match came in the old First Round (today's Third Round) of the FA Cup in February 1904 at Goodison Park which Spurs won 2-1 with a Vivian Woodward goal and an own goal from Everton's Balmer.

Both clubs embarked on a central European tour in the summer of 1905 an met twice with Everton winning both matches 2-0 in Vienna and 1-0 in Prague.

A second FA Cup meeting came in January 1908 with Spurs losing 1-0 at Everton.

At the end of that season, both Spurs and Everton set sail for a tour of South America and played two exhibition matches in Palermo, Argentina with the first game drawn 0-0 and Everton winning the second 4-0. On the voyage home, Spurs 'borrowed' the ship captain's parrot who lived happilly for a decade at the Tottenham offices in the High Road until it dropped dead the day news came through that Arsenal had stolen Spurs' First Division place in 1919.

The first Football League meetings came in the First Division in the 1909-10 season with Everton winning 4-2 at Goodison and Spurs winning 3-0 at the Lane.

The clubs then met regularly in the First Division up to season 1927-28 with eight wins for Spurs, ten wins for Everton and eight matches drawn.

The only League meetings between the two clubs outside the Top Flight of English Football came in season 1930-31 in the Second Division with Everton winning 4-2 at Goodison Park and Spurs winning 1-0 at White Hart Lane.

The clubs met for two more seasons in Division One before the outbreak of World War Two with a win apiece and two games drawn.

Spurs won a 3rd Round FA Cup tie 3-0 at home in 1934 and a 5th round tie at home in 1937 4-3 after a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park.

The first meeting after WW2 came in the 5th Round at Goodison Park in February 1950 with Everton winning 1-0.

Spurs regained their First Division status in 1950-51 and did the 'double' over Everton on their way to the first Football League Championship won by Tottenham Hotspur with a 2-1 away win and a 3-0 home win. Everton lost their First Division place that same season along with Sheffield Wednesday, while Chelsea escaped the drop on goal average.

Everton were back in the First Division for the 1954-55 season and the clubs have met in the Top Flight for every subsequent season to date, except for 1977-78 when Spurs dropped down to the Second Division for one season.

Bill Nicholson's first game as Tottenham's manager came at White Hart Lane in October 1958 and Spurs were 6-1 up at half-time and went on to beat Everton 10-4.

A League game at White Hart Lane in December 1969 was abandoned due to floodlight failure after 29 minutes.

The two clubs met in February and March of 1986 in a competition called the Screen Sport Super Cup, which was introduced to give teams who would have qualified for the European competitions some compensation, as English clubs were banned from Europe. The first match at White Hart Lane ended goalless while Everton won the return leg 3-1.

The only Football League Cup meeting between the clubs came in the Fourth Round in October 2009 with Spurs winning 2-0 at the Lane with goals from Tom Huddlestone and Robbie Keane.

Both Tottenham Hotspur and Everton were founder-members of the Premier League and are two of the seven clubs who have been ever-present for the entire 21 seasons of the competition, along with Arsenal, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United.

Spurs have taken more points off Everton in the Premier League than from any other opponent. The 71 points won by Spurs against Everton in the 41 matches played to date gives an average of 1.73 points won per game.

The 2010-11 meetings in the Premier League only yielded one point for Spurs, which came in a 1-1 draw at the Lane in October 2010. The reverse fixture in January 2011 was won 1-2 by Everton. The Toffees' goals were scored by Leighton Baines at Spurs and Louis Saha & Seamus Coleman at Goodison Park. Rafael van der Vaart scored both Spurs' goals last season.

Spurs' home game last season was re-arranged from the opening day to January 2012 due to rioting in the Tottenham area. Spurs won the match 2-0 with goals from Aaron Lennon and a belter from Benoit Assou-Ekotto. During the January transfer window, Spurs signed Everton's French striker Louis Saha while Steven Pienaar moved in the opposite direction on loan until the end of the season. The match at Goodison Park in March 2012 was won 1-0 by Everton when Nikica Jelavic scored his first goal for the club in the 22nd minute.

During the Summer of 2012, Everton re-signed Steven Pienaar from Spurs on a permanent basis.

Everton won the fixture at Goodison Park in December 2012 with two very late goals in injury time from Steven Pienaar and Nikica Jelavic after Clint Dempsey had put Tottenham ahead after 76 minutes.

Overall, Spurs have won 61 of the 170 matches played so far with Everton winning 59 and 50 matches drawn.

What do you do for a living?

AVB is saying that their is a big possibility he will be back for the city game, but this is witout an assessment so he is just hoping right now and he doesnt really know anything, even if he does come back against city it would be a risky move to bring him back before he is a 100% because without that explosiveness that he has, he is half the player that he usually he is, i have put in the transfer forum he should look very carefully at someone like torres who was continually brought back to early by lpool and eventually was out injured for a long time because he was never really fit in the first place and as much as AVB and spuds fan say no we have some good players as well as Bale we really really do, you have to admit that he has dragged you kicking and screaming to the position you're in and without him you would probably be struggling for top six and theres nothing wrong with that, lpool are a one man team and they admit it so are the scum and we arent above toure dragging us through games when some people are having a stinker

Bale back for the City game - typical really! Not that I wish injury on such a good player but would have been nice if he could have returned 2 days later. Just like Shrek will be over his groin injury in time for the derby after missing two games.

This is according to the registered physio brought in by sky sports who has no access to the scans or any knowledge of gareth bale if they rush him back they have no idea how he will react and lets be honest even before he got injured he was pretty much inneffectual last night he does this every season, hes a world beater for 10 games and then goes missing

INJURY UPDATE
Posted 05 April 2013 4:57pm
The Club can confirm that Gareth Bale (sprained ankle ligaments), William Gallas (calf strain) and Aaron Lennon (soft tissue contusion below the knee) all underwent scans today (Friday) after being forced off with injuries during our Europa League Quarter Final First Leg draw with Basel last night.

The results of these scans have indicated that all three players are expected to return to training within two weeks.

Bale, Gallas and Lennon have all commenced their treatment today and are responding positively.

Looked like bale had his season ended, but I guess not

Its so cute that you are so desparate for him to come back you will believe anything the club tells you, back training in two weeks and in contention for the 21st, so basically they expect both players two have 2 weeks of treatment for ligament damage on ankle then back playing straight away yes thats a great idea rush him back from that injury because its not like his ability to twist and turn and his pace is a big part of his game at all.

I seem to remember mancini telling us that aguero and kompany would be fit for everton etc , managers never lie do they especially not about key players being fit.

Jan Vertonghen's Player of the Month Award for March 2013 is the 12th time it has gone to a Spurs player.

Spurs have won the Manager of the Month 8 times.

Jan Vertonghen expressed his delight after being named Barclays Player of the Month for March.

The defender has enjoyed a fantastic first campaign for us and capped a fine March with a goal and assist in last week's important 2-1 win at Swansea.

Jan also played in the 2-1 win against Arsenal and scored twice at Anfield earlier in the month but unfortunately we were pegged back that day by Liverpool.

"I’m very proud to win this trophy," said Jan, who has played in 41 of our 46 matches so far in all competitions. "It was an unbelievable feeling when I was told about it."

Asked about his secret to scoring goals from the back, Jan said: "Perhaps opponents forget to give defenders the attention! Actually, my secret is probably Gareth Bale giving me three amazing assists! I’m very happy to score and I’m sure it helped me to win this trophy."

Everton are next up in the Premier League on Sunday as the players have to quickly recover from their efforts against FC Basel in the Europa League quarter-final, first leg on Thursday night.

"We will have to be right at the top of our game against Everton, they are a tough side to beat but we'll be ready," added Jan.

"We have big players who are used to the pressure. It’s like a final for us every game now, so we have to perform every week and every midweek.

"We know we have to win every game to be in the top four and to move into the next round of the Europa League. It’s a good pressure and a good motivation. Hopefully, I’ll score a few more goals as well!"

No, I think they are personal awards.

Alex Ferguson had to construct an extension to his house to house his.
