The Tottenham Thread 13/14 (continued)

I get the impression Spurs appear rudderless this season. A kind of lack of leadership and direction. I don't see a consistent pattern of play or a player who is trying to grab hold of games. I don't know how Spurs have such a good away record and managed to stay in touch with the top 4. I have not been convinced all season but fair enough they have had a few good results this year.

Spurs need a clearout and a manager who can transform the attitude of the club. Dare I say it but I think Mancini would be great for Spurs. Okay, he has allegedly had run-ins with players but he is a strong character who would change the culture of the club for the good.
Hah I'd say Adebayor would run if that happened though. Van Gaal has been linked, great coach but away from the bigger European leagues for quite a while now so not the guarantee of success that he used to be.

Pretty much spot on in the first paragraph. We only really have two leaders in the squad now, Sandro and Kaboul. Problem being they have spent more time leading the Physios on a merry chase than leading our squad.

Mancini would be a very bad fit for us at this moment in time. He is not a forceful enough personality to breathe some life into our team. Also he has only really enjoyed success when he has had a fuck load of money to spend, first at Inter and then with you. In contrast we have to break even on transfers every year, and most often make a profit. After seeing what the best of his efforts could accomplish in England with literally unlimited transfer funds, I would be highly trepidatious in predicting what he could achieve in England with literally £0. We need a manager with a clear system who will demand that we all pull in that direction. LVG is that man, and he wants the job (which is nice). The only problem being that he may be too much of a strong personality for Levy to deal with.

That's a very strange comment, Mancini brought about massive improvement here in his first 6 months with a similar squad to yours after signing only Adam Johnson and Paddy V and achieved great success at Lazio and Fiorentina on shoestring budgets before he joined Inter.
As for not being a forceful personality.......

It is really not an especially long time. He won the Bundesliga and German cup in 2010, and lost in the Champions League final the same year. He got sacked mid way through the next season as Bayern dropped to fourth and took up the Holland job immediately. That is only 3 seasons ago and he is still in football, just managing an international side.

So technically he won the double, and narrowly missed out on the treble in his very last club job, a bit over 3 years ago.

Great success at fiorentina? His record there was played 27, won 6, drew 5, and lost 16. he was sacked while they were 18th in the table.

At Lazio he did alright, 4th in his first season, 6th after that, and won the italian cup.

Yes you did improve under him. But he improved from Mark Hughes.... surely most managers can improve on Mark Hughes. I also remember you being terribly defensive and boring to watch during his first year. Still, most title challengers build from the back and that's what he did. I won't blame him for finishing behind us that season as he was only there for half of it. However, in all fairness, with your resources anything but trophy wins must count as a disappointment. So for Mancini to only win the league once, and the fa cup once, with the money he spent is a pretty poor showing.

-- Tue Feb 25, 2014 1:18 pm --

No problem, weirdly everyone on the spurs boards keep claiming that he "hasn't won anything in years", which just isn't true.

Mancini won the Coppa at fiorentina before getting his coaching badges, had to cope with all his senior players getting sold and he quit because of working conditions, hardly a fair assessment.

Spurs could do with someone to step up and lead them as Matty said. They don't seem to have a natural leader and much of their squad is new and not really accustomed to the nature of the club. Paulinho, Dembele, Sandros, Eriksen etc are all good players but will any of them step up and represent the club through thick and thin. City now have a real identity thanks to players like Sergio/Vincent/Yaya stepping up in big games when required. It has been true of the last two seasons the spurs have literally handed Arsenal 4th place despite being in the ascendency. This season they are chasing and have to really work hard to reel Liverpool in.

Wow, the possibility of mancini managing spurs lol. I think he can do good there, kicking their ass into discipline.

Impatient spurs fans might be calling his head after the first defeat though, as they're now doing with sherwood. Lol they're not getting anyone world class until summer. Shouldn't have been too loud with #avbout.

Mancini would do a great job there. I hope he does not go. They moaned about AVB, but he had them 5 points of fourth and in all the cups. They had just signed a legion of players all adapting into the Premier League, yet they fired.
