The unemployment fudge

That's what they do. But after a while it is not unreasonable to ask people to go and get a job, any job, rather than be paid by the state.

But if you are forcing them into a ZHC the state is paying more as much if not more in work top ups. The employer will then in turn try and keep the employee on as less hours as possible so that they don't have to pay employers NIC. So effectively you have 3-4 doing 1 persons job paying virtually zero employers NIC no sick pay, holiday or maternity pay. Its a win win situation for the employer because the state is picking all that up. It's mind numbing stupid and short sighted brings in less tax costs more in work benefits but gives you that boast look we have the lowest unemployment ever.

Less than 3% of those employed are on zero hours contracts, and the numbers are falling as businesses move away from them.

Stop making excuses.

Don’t worry about it. As soon as the pesky foreigners have gone and the world is begging us to trade with it, there’ll be huge salaried jobs for everyone. It’ll be brilliant......

Because it turns out that if you let people starve then they generally turn to crime, it effects the prosperity of their children and the state as a whole becomes overburdened and suffers.

Because they have a job that they aren't suited for and employers aren't stupid.

In my opinion you take any job you can to pay the bills whilst your looking for the career you actually want.

You don't always get what you want but I don't see why the tax payer (ie me) should be paying out for people to sit on their backsides being choosy.

Record levels of employment here in the UK (so the Tories say) but the Government are unable to collect enough income tax to maintain public services.

At the same time we all bemoan youth unemployment in Greece at 55%... But if we didn't make our youth stay in full time education until 18 our figures would be similar.

Someone in the Tory Government is telling porkies

Government spending as a proportion of GDP is 41%. The tax burden at 34% is the highest it has been since 1970. Like it or not, the reason for the tight spending round is because dept as a proportion of GDP is extremely high at over 85% post financial crash and needs to be got back down or we do risk becoming like Greece.

No porkies, just financial reality. There is no magic money tree, it has to be paid for from somewhere.

I don't understand this argument. What is the alternative, not force them to get an education and instead allow them to sit on the dole? This government in particular has created more apprenticeships etc than any other as alternatives to education so I don't get where it is going.

Young people in Greece who don't go into education will end up in the 55% bracket because they don't have any qualifications nor any skills in any particular line of work? Given the economy is also in the toilet thanks to mismanagement and excess spending, is it therefore any wonder they are unemployed?

Perhaps if Greece sent that 55% to school to do economics instead of doing nothing then maybe they would pull themselves out of that mess.

A ZHC might actually be a great choice for a grad who wants flexibility to arrange interviews for roles in their preferred field.

That a lot of people actually like working that way doesn't fit the narrative.

And yes, there are companies that take the piss.

Don’t forget, there’s a huge difference between unemployment numbers and economically inactive numbers. The 16-64 age group has an unemployment number of 1.4M, give or take. Working population (16-64), in work is about 32million, giving an ‘employment rate’ of about 75% but an ‘unemployment rate’ of 4.5%.
What we don’t do is class the economically inactive (not actively looking for work in the last 4 weeks or unable to start work in the next 2 weeks) as unemployed. So, 25% of the people aged 16-64 don’t have a job, but we have ‘full employment’.
