My brother in law is Italian (my sister in law is English and they live in Italy) and over there he works as a waiter and a waiter in Italy unlike here is regarded as quite a decent and well paid profession. He has no choice but to work ridiculous hours (60+) because other jobs do not exist as there is no industry nearby. Still he enjoys it, it keeps him fit and it pays very well (mostly because of tips).
The reason he has to work to the bone like he does is because they live in the beautiful tourist area in the Italian lakes where the cost of living is in line or even above London standards. Basically he does very well by waitering standards but he can't afford to not work living in the place they do.
He has asked me a few times recently what it is like in England for work because they are considering coming over here as the Italian economy isn't great and tourism has its peaks and troughs. His problem is when winter comes and all tourism dies he basically is out of work for a bit and earns nothing.
The first thing he asks me about England is not what job will suit him or whatever, he asks me which restaurants are nearby and which are the busiest (tips). He basically has the mentality of he must work and earn as much money and he has no choice. He never says, oh I might stay unemployed for a bit and turn down the waiter job in case something better comes along.....
It is just a completely different mentality and honestly we have no idea how good we have it. If people can afford to turn down work to earn the pittance on the dole then clearly even for the unemployed we aren't all that impoverished as some would make out.
