The unemployment fudge

But this government expects people to take any old shit job so they can boast about record unemployment figures. So unless you have parents that have deep pockets or friends in high place then what is the point of going to university to improve your employability. Total waste of time if you are going to end up pulling pints for that cretin at Weatherspoons moron or flipping burgers at McDonaalds

It appears that on the face of it, you are happy for British citizens to refuse jobs like this, claim unemployment benefits and then defend immigrants entering the country to do the jobs, telling us all how we need them because we wont do them?

Fucking ridiculous position to take imo im sorry mate.

Cake and eat it springs to mind.

No one is forcing anyone to get a job. They're just saying they won't support people ad infinitum if they don't take one. As someone who in the past both pulled pints and flipped burgers (and went to university), I'm sorry you consider that beneath you.

Its not beneath anyone but a little bit of level headedness would allow skilled people a reasonable amount of time to find the appropriate role for someone that is all.

First of all when did I say British citizens? I don't buy of that nationalist shit, on the contrary I would love to ship out the knuckle dragging idiot who blame everything on immigrants. As I have said in another post the pendulum has swung to far a tory government that is obsessed with shoe horning everybody into any shit job just so that they can boast about it constantly is wrong and insane. If you want to create a high skilled well paid economy then give skilled people time to find the right role (this is not infinite). It’s not rocket science all this a market economy is based on competition for job so there are people who are going to be out of work at some time to create that. Having low levels of unemployment through state sponsored ZHC is communism you couldn’t make this shit up from a right wing government.

My brother in law is Italian (my sister in law is English and they live in Italy) and over there he works as a waiter and a waiter in Italy unlike here is regarded as quite a decent and well paid profession. He has no choice but to work ridiculous hours (60+) because other jobs do not exist as there is no industry nearby. Still he enjoys it, it keeps him fit and it pays very well (mostly because of tips).

The reason he has to work to the bone like he does is because they live in the beautiful tourist area in the Italian lakes where the cost of living is in line or even above London standards. Basically he does very well by waitering standards but he can't afford to not work living in the place they do.

He has asked me a few times recently what it is like in England for work because they are considering coming over here as the Italian economy isn't great and tourism has its peaks and troughs. His problem is when winter comes and all tourism dies he basically is out of work for a bit and earns nothing.

The first thing he asks me about England is not what job will suit him or whatever, he asks me which restaurants are nearby and which are the busiest (tips). He basically has the mentality of he must work and earn as much money and he has no choice. He never says, oh I might stay unemployed for a bit and turn down the waiter job in case something better comes along.....

It is just a completely different mentality and honestly we have no idea how good we have it. If people can afford to turn down work to earn the pittance on the dole then clearly even for the unemployed we aren't all that impoverished as some would make out.

How long is reasonable? Does it differ by sector and job level?

Setting arbitrary levels is not the way forward but considering factors such as a senior level you would generally be on a 3 months notice period. Where as say a sales person or someone in tech would be put on garden leave with immediate affect for 3-6 months. It would have to be discretionary in those type of scenarios.

That's what they do. But after a while it is not unreasonable to ask people to go and get a job, any job, rather than be paid by the state.

Your brother in law should be able to pick up waitering work in London given the cost of living is not a problem.
Your argument generally about people turning down work here doesn't hold because the UK is actually at 'full' employment at the moment (the number out of work is statistically at the level of people temporarily out of work between jobs).
So no scivers here mate.
After Brexit, low paid jobs such as fruit picking, processing waste should enhance the employment prospects of the indigenous UK population, assuming there enough able bodied workers around given 'full' employment.
The future's bright.
The future's Tory.
The future's Brexit.

From The Brussels Times:

“The Brussels regional employment office, Actiris, has launched its second consecutive campaign to encourage jobseekers to learn Dutch, and featuring national footballer Vincent Kompany.

This year, the campaign includes a competition whose nine winners will get an opportunity to receive a private Dutch lesson from the Manchester United defender and his partner for the campaign, comedian Abdel en Vrai.”

I think there may be a job opening in the fact checking department of The Brussels Times or the promotions department of Actiris!!!
