He wasn't exactly famous, and it was over a month ago but I only read about it today in the new Classic Rock magazine.
Pete Garner the founding member and bassist in The Stone Roses. I got to know Pete from when he worked in the downstairs record shop of Paperchase (the original shop in St Anne's Square, not the chain) He looked quite Goth back then, and I recall him always going on about his new band then too. (I am pretty sure he was responsible for when their name got graffiti sprayed all over town)
When he had decided to quit the Roses (he really didn't think he was a good enough bassist) he knew I played bass, and said I should give them a bell, what could have been, lol
