The "which famous person died today" thread

RIP cricket umpire Dickie Bird aged 92.What a character and what a life he's lived.
Very sad news.

"Dickie" must be the most famous umpire in the history of the sport.

He was a great character and instantly recognisable by any fan of cricket, and respected for his fairness and knowledge of the game.

R. I. P. Dickie.

Love this story:-

DICKIE: I couldn’t believe it. I was sat at home one November day and the phone rang. The voice said: ‘This is the master of the household from Buckingham Palace. I’ve been commanded by Her Majesty the Queen to see if you are available to have lunch with her.’ I said: ‘If I’ve been invited to have lunch with her at Buckingham Palace, I’ll walk it from Barnsley.’ He said: ‘That’s all I want to know, the invitation will follow.’ And it did.

I had to be at Buckingham Palace for 1pm for lunch and I was outside the Palace gates at 8 o’clock in the morning. I got there early. I thought: ‘I better not miss this one.’ All there was having lunch with her that day was myself and Prince Edward, and he had to go because he had another engagement. So, there was just the Queen and me sat at this oval table in Buckingham Palace. It was a proud moment. After lunch, I sat in the lounge with her all afternoon talking different sports. I left at 5 o’clock. It was the greatest day of me life

That’s a brilliant story.

I'd heard him tell that story. It's fantastic.

I'm glad to have been alive, at a time, when all sports had characters. A wonderful personality from a bygone age.
Although I am surprised he hasn't given himself 'not out, going down leg '.
Bless him.
I remember him once apologising to Athers for giving him out. (He was plumb)

A great musician. RIP.
Danny was the glue that held together so many of my favorite albums. Not only Nick Drake and John Martyn but he gave an entirely new perspective to Kate Bush with The Hounds of Love. I suspect many on here won't have heard of him but he was a true musical colossus and one of the last links to John & Nick in particular.
Thank you sir for what you gave us. RIP

As I've got older, my music collection has become a lot broader. I only got into Pentangle a few years ago. Amazing stuff. The teenage Pistols/ACDC fan would've laughed.
