The last man alive from the attack on the USS Arizona, Pearl Harbor, Dec 7, 1941, died yesterday.
He was 18 yrs old when he was posted to his assignment at Pearl & the Arizona. His ship was never raised and serves as the memorial of that day.
Of its 1,400-member crew of the Arizona that day, 1,177 died. The ship was hit by a dive bomb that hit below the surface and penetrated the gunpowder stores below decks. The explosion lifted the ship 30-40 feet out of the water before it sank in the harbor.
Lou Conter was 102 years young when he died at his home in California, in a small town at the foot of the Sierras.
