The "which famous person died today" thread

For those of you who care about basketball instead of or in addition to Star Trek as well as pathfinding African American cultural icons (read about what Martin Luther King told Nichelle Nichols), we also lost Bill Russell today.

One of the greatest ever centers or players, and probably hands down the greatest defensive player of all time. He played 13 NBA seasons with the Boston Celtics, 3 college seasons, and one Olympic season. And won 11 NBA championships, 2 NCAA championships and a gold medal. 14 titles in 17 years. Probably has never been a greater track record in American sports. Also the league’s first Black head coach, and a civil rights trailblazer who faced a lot of discrimination in the 50s and 60s. And by all accounts in his later years after his fierce competitive streak gave way, a gracious, kind and funny guy.

An incredible man. One of my all-time sports heroes (despite my love for Wilt and Kareem). RIP big fella.

There's a nice piece on it here. Roddenberry deserves credit too -- he wanted to show a diverse future with harmony across human races (but not necessarily alien ones I guess).

I've seen a lot of Star Trek but never been a huge fan of it TBH. It never drew me in.
