The "Winning Mentality" Myth

I think it helps in the tight games. If you belive you will win, you don't start to panic later in The game. This keeps your head on the game and limits mistakes or rash passes.

You can feel the tension and hear some dicks at some games after 15 mins when we haven't scored. This creates added pressure when it's not required. This is partly to do with the fans aswell.

The winning mentality is about sensing when a team is weak and going for the kill like we (eventually) did against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

It's not sitting back at home against a weak Liverpool team and congratulating ourselves on an absorbing tactical battle that gave us a point.

It's not switching off when you're at 0-0 or 3-3 against the rags and thinking "We're happy with a point". Bellamy demonstrated winning mentality when, with just 60 seconds to go, he tried to release SWP in a good position in the home derby. He wasn't prepared to settle for a point when the game could still be won. Sadly it didn't come off and The rags showed that winnig mentality by going down the other end of the field and scoring. Yet people criticised Bellers for giving the ball away.

Winning mentality is what it says it is - going into a game to win it and making sure your opponents don't. Winning mentality is upping your game when you go a goal down at home, not giving up. I really haven't seen as much of that under Mancini compared to Hughes.

^^^^^agreed totally!!!!^^^^^^^^^^

but as dave said its down to the management TEAM too......what feeds the hunger for success is you must develop a hatred for the opposition for the duration of the game(as a player)....does everyone agree you play BEST when you are ANGRY?????

I have been thinking about this for a while as we hear it thrown around a lot. So far from reading here I am no wiser at all.

Did someone really say it's when you keep believing and keep running to the end! Vieira is supposed to be a winner and never even starts running!

Seriously though there have been plenty of players in winning teams that wouldn't leap out to you as winners. Should we go out and buy John O'Shea because he is a winner? What exactly is it within Silvinho that makes him a winner and have we seen it?

I believe in it, it's pretty pointless going onto a pitch thinking your going to lose, you may aswell not bother turning up, and that's exactly what will happen, you'll lose.
Bellamy gets a lot of criticism in the press and such for having a go at his own team mates on the field and behind closed doors wherever he's been, it's only because he wants to win so badly that he does it, most of the time, (other times he's just having a whinge).

I note you all absolve the manager of any responsibility for this, as usual.
i think thats another thread dave....keeping to the point of the OP`s thread...i feel we should discuss this a little more first mate!

I know des.

My point is that this cliche of having a "winning mentality" is, to a large part, down to the manager.

He instills it in the good teams.

Ferguson's a master at it.

Its about confidence and being positive, if we start next season aiming for fourth we will struggle to get fourth, we need to start it with the aim of winning the league.

i agree totally!!!! but less the manager what other avenues can we go down for the right answers. tbh from interviews of bobby.... eeeeeh doesn t eeeeeh look like that much of a eeeeeeeeh motivator to me (imo!)

all that aside... it comes down to #1. fans

#2.players egoes and mentality and the right run to gain momentum/their desire for our club-wanting to stay and win....not their own careers (are they playing enough?),as such.

#3.without even mentioning the officials who play a major part in swinging the modern game.
