The "Winning Mentality" Myth

Players' mentality is of course very important, but usually when you hear people talking about 'winning mentality' what they actually mean (even if they don't know it themselves) is 'better players'.

Players who have it are those who have the professionalism to be as good as they can be, so tend in any case to be the better players by definition. It does exist, it's just not the snarling fist clenching the media would have you believe.

I do agree with JMA and the op that normally when you hear talk of it in the media it's just bollocks to explain a freak set of results and (usually) big up some English snarler at the expense of a feckless foreign softie

I think this thread has proved that nobody really knows what a winning mantality is because it is different things to different people. It's opinion and nothing more but it sounds right and plenty of people use the phrase either to say we need it or he has it or a team has it. It's just used to illustrate a point even though it's sort of meaningless.

-- Thu May 13, 2010 11:21 pm --

excuse me if i seem stupid but i thought all our players played to win or do they just play as ordered by rob the manc a draw being better than a loss

It's not difficult,

Tiger Woods
Pete Sampras
Steve Davis

Winning mentality is simply the ability to put your sport above everything in order to acheive a level of performance above the rest. This also applies to musicians and actors/dancers (ballet).

A winning mentality means many thousands of hours spent practicing. It means discarding the normal pleasures of life. It means fanatical devotion to the task.

But are there not countless sportsmen and women who do exactly that but do not become the winners like Woods/Sampras and Davis because they don't quite have the required level of talent. But some in winning teams ( O'Shea/Silvinho) might be considered to have the winning mentality and are " proven winners"
