A mate of mine was Baltimore City police for 11 years. He is actually in a couple of episodes, small bit parts. I asked him if The Wire is really like it is in Baltimore. He told me yeah it is very realistic except in real life it is worse. Top show, The Wire. I love it. If you've not seen it I highly recommend it.

Dominic West(Jimmy McNulty) said in a interview in his 2nd day in Baltimore he was assigned to a detective in Homicide to shadow him for a couple of weeks to see how they work
He said hes never been so scared in his life for those 2 weeks, and said if you think poverty and crime in the UK was bad its nothing compared to what he saw on the streets of Baltimore

Re: The Wire.

I can't really get into it. Watched the first two series & had to force myself to watch episodes. Found it tedious to be honest. Each to their own but for me it's not a patch on The Sopranos or Boardwalk Empire. I'm not sure I can be arsed trying to watch any more series. Does it get any better after season 2?

Yes it does, the stories arc and come together with some big players dying along he way, that's what I loved about it so much yu never knew who was going to die.

Clay Davis LOL!!!

We gave up watching half way through season 2 but luckily left it recording on series link. Or night we were bored and gave it a go and got completely hooked. I love it. Up to season 5 episode 5 now.

I hope this is no spoiler but the fact that Omar is gay IMO is genius! He must be the coolest gay guy ever.

Re: The Wire.

Besides the first half of seasons 1 and 2 being drawn out, the only let down in the whole show for me was that Bunk and McNulty were the most unrealistic drunks I've ever seen. I bet they never have been wasted in real life. The director should have tanked them up proper any time they were at their railway line scenes. Maybe it's the director that was never drunk in his life come to think of it?

One more thing in Series 4 there was one particular episode were it was pure comedy. I wonder if some directors ( cause it seemed to have a few) wanted to lighten the mood somewhat?

they are perfectly realistic
I've never seen anyone so obviously attempt to slur their speak and wobble about in my life. It's hard to fake drunk but it can be done and they failed to IMO.

I don't doubt that one bit. Baltimore is a rough city. You don't have to go too far from "nice" areas to find places that if I called them "dodgy" would be a massive understatement.

I'm the other way, never got the hype with Sopranos, yet love the Wire.

Boardwalk Empire was wank IMO

Re: The Wire.

I loved The Wire, and like many people say it takes a bit of patience at the start. I thought season 1 was pretty average and considered giving it up but since so many people kept telling me how good it was I started on season 2 and was hooked from then. Watched the whole lot in a few weeks and thought it was one of the best TV shows ever made. I'm not a fan of this whole ranking the best shows thing but it really is up there with the best. Like the Sopranos (which is also amazing IMO, only watched the first 3 seasons so far) there are so many characters, with many not appearing every episode, that it takes a while to get to know them all, and their personalities. Once you remember everyone's names and who they are it makes for some awesome viewing. A great thing about The Wire is that although some characters do some truly heinous things and all have their faults, you can't help liking about 95% of them, even the "bad guys"!.

Re: The Wire.

Finished it all a few weeks ago and it is absolutely brilliant. Best series i've ever watched.

Didn't like the Sopranos, but I am a fan of Boardwalk Empire, season 3 of that was brilliant.

Re: The Wire.

Not read the whole thread so someone might of mentioned it. But if you like The Wire give The Corner a go it's by the same writer only 6 episodes of but it's really good a lot of actors from The Wire are in it as well.

It's about the druggies more than the Po-po.

Re: The Wire.

The greatest thing ever shown on TV by a country mile. Took 3 episodes to get used to the lingo and after that it was pure viewing addiction. Series 4 about the school system just shaded it from 2 and 3 for me, and Omar finally copping it was one of the most stunning bits of telly I've ever seen. I actually shouted "Nooooo" out loud when it happened. And I think Obama halted one of his campaign rallies so he could watch it, didn't he?

I can recommend David Simon's book about his year with the Baltimore PD, on which the series was based, as well. 600 plus pages, but well worth it - Homicide

Re: The Wire.
