They should listen to Obama

They're not illegal over here either.

Surely you agree that owning a licence becoming mandatory would be a huge step in the right direction in the USA? (I accept it's unlikely because they don't want the "gurvermeant" knowing what guns they have etc).

I do. I was arguing against the strange fantasy I keep seeing about the licensing of guns to restrict their sale to conditions somewhat like the UK.

Anything that stops innocent people being killed is something that I'm in favour of, and whilst it isn't a silver bullet in gun crime (if you'll pardon the pun), having heavier licensing on guns and gun ownership will quite probably help in that direction.

It doesn't matter what is said by President Obama, the right-wingers will fight it. I think that if he discovered a cure for cancer the republicans would vote down it's production because it would put doctors and nurses out of work.

Its a problem that seems to have no solution, the mentality of such a fantastic country, I mean fantastic in terms of NASA and foreign aid they dish out and such a high standard of living, iconic things like cars, clothes, music and a fantastic entertainment industry which most of us enjoy.
This picture has been posted before in off topic and yet it continues to have a huge effect on me, the blonde woman is a politician, imagine if a politician in the UK or Oz sent out this xmas card, it would be the end of their careers, but in the US its acceptable, even the little boy is holding a gun.

Filthy red fuckers.

The original link shows 4 dead and 13 injured.
Just to pose a question, I imagine there are probably higher numbers than those by other causes. Vehicle accidents, swimming pools, medical negligence just to name three.
If car accidents and deaths cause more deaths and accidents than guns, should we not focus more on American cars and those crazy car-nutjobs?

Two choices here: you're serious or you're having some fun. If you're serious maybe you need to have it explained to you that wars aren't fought by having a bunch of people drive cars into each other. And it should also be noted that mass murderers choose guns 100% more than they do cars to commit their crimes.

His proposals don't even do anything. Most will be thrown out as unconstitutional after he leaves office.

We have no interest in giving up guns. Guns ensure our country can never have a tyrant or be conquered.

Your condescending response doesn't suggest that you could respect a differing view other than yours.
It is true that wars are fought using guns. If it weren't for guns, Hitler may have won and we'd all be speaking German apart from the Jews who would have been eradicated whilst the rest of us lived in complete fascism.
Your second point is where you mention mass murderers. Who? Like Mao, Hitler, Stalin?
Do you know how many those 3 alone murdered? Millions. Millions of people killed. How were they able to kill so many? They made it illegal for the Jews to own guns in Hitlers case. The others banned private ownership of guns so that people could not defend themselves.

Now, of course, any death is regrettable but obviously we as a society do deem a certain amount of death as acceptable. People die in car accidents and drown in swimming pools but we don't ask to ban them even though more die from car accidents each year than from guns.

I seriously thought you were kidding. The problem is that owning a rifle in the US isn't going to enable people to overthrow a tyrannical government since our military has aircraft carriers, war ships, helicopters, fighter jets and countless other technologically superior weapons. So spouting right-wing talking points about Hitler doesn't really apply to today's world.

They are not illegal here but a lot of guns are (nearly any assault or rapid fire weapon is) , getting one requires a great deal of background checks, they need to be kept in pretty hardcore secure ways and if you break any of the above rules the penalties are severe. The only time you ever really come across them if you aren't involved in gang crime is the police who all carry them.

Bang on , the idea some hicks with Kalashnikovs could fight drones and the vast array that could be used against them is beyond comical . Some American tech geeks sat 2000 miles away taking them out like a fox in he hen house.

I say the second amendment is applied as it is meant, all Americans should be able to carry muskets and swords at all times to protect themselves against red coats
