So when we won the league who was our Thiago that is so essential.
A younger Barry.

Is that right. So the Barry's of this world are so hard to come by. I like Gareth. He does a good job but to say that he's a rare breed is a little wide of the mark. So the question was If Ferdy got injured what would we do. What did we do when Barry didnt play?

A midfield group of Yaya, Milner, Navas, Garcia, Rodwell, Barry, Nasri, Silva, Razak and hopefully Isco is stronger than our title winning midfield would you agree?

That's a bit unfair and you know it is. Milner doesn't play centrally, Rodwell is and has been injury prone both with Everton and us, Nasri and silva play further forward (and don't play well together), Barry was poor towards the end of last season (FA cup final Wigan just walked through him), Garcia is poor/not suited to the prem, Isco does not play behind attacking mid and rasak hasn't been tested enough at this level.[/quote]

Just because Roberto Mancini did not play Milner centrally does not mean he does not play centrally. Its his best position!!!!

-- Fri Jun 21, 2013 12:14 am --

So essentially a 4-3-3?
Yes. Am I missing something? I'm not sure.

Just getting to the logistics. So that's your 3 with say Rodwell, Barry, Milner and Razak in reserve.

Then for your front 3 you have Aguero Tevez Silva Navas Dzeko Guidetti and hopefully Isco.

Now if Tevez and Dzeko leave we need another striker because we'd be fucked if Kun had another injury ravaged season like last year. So for arguments sake say Cavani.

Are you going to keep Silva Nasri Aguero Navas Isco Guidetti and Cavani happy no matter how many games we have. Even if Nasri went someone we don't want to piss off will be pissed off.

We had plenty of patches last season when we were desperate for fit players. We also go knocked out of 2 of the four competitions we were in very early. With this type of talent we will be playing 60 games a season. Nobody should be starting that many games. There is enough playing time to go around.

Just like with zaha, when a player signs for united in the press eyes he immediately becomes the best in the world in that particular position but im yet to be convinced of this if he was THAT good at that price there would be any number of clubs desparate to make space for him in their midfield as its no risk, 15m to us, chelski, bayern, dortmund, juventus, milan and any other number of top clubs is nothing and im wondering why people arent beating down his door to get him in their team. if he really was the next big thing wouldnt barcelona be guaranteeing him more game time next year, wouldnt it be a massive coup for real madrid to take the next emerging star right from barcelona , wouldnt it be marvellous for city or chelsea to have a player capable of anchoring their midfield for the next ten years.

Maybe just maybe though he isnt as good as everyone seems to think he is, barcelona arent exactly averse to bringing through good players from their youth system but they chose to go and sign fabregas at a cost of 40m instead of moving this guy on, bojan and dos santos were the next big things and were gonna light up europe after a couple of decent sub performances for barca and then they faded into obscurity. Im not disputing hes a good player and has quality im just curious that given all this quality there isnt more suitors.

Looks like Rags got this one.. we'll see, not sure he'll fit there perfectly though it's good buy for young talented player if those 17m is real price.

Hi, United fan here IN PEACE! (yes there is such a thing)

Keep seeing lots of comments on here regarding our style and Thiago not fitting in, dont really understand why? I know its a team you all hate more than any other and wont ever be able to have an opinion that isnt heavily negative about the club but this idea that United is purely a kick and rush wingers team is laughably wrong, firstly we scored way more goals than any other team last season (you included) about 20 more i think it was, this when our wingers had their worst collective and individual seasons in years, Nani hardly played, Valencia had an horrific season and Young spent most of it injured and is largely shit anyway, combine their total assists and you get less than 12! so where did all our goals come from if they are all we play through? mainly Kagawa, Rooney, Van Persie and Carrick were our highest assist players, hardly kick and rush wingers last time i looked, more highly technical central players.

United have always used wingers, its part of our history, that dosnt mean every angle of our play goes through them, it dosnt, if it did wed have managed 12 league goals last season, as thats the amount our wingers assisted, if Thiago joins he'll likely play in this kind of set up:

Carrick - Thiago
Kagawa

Think and hope Rooney will be moved on, and those 3 excite me far more than any side with Rooney in it, throw Van Persie up top and the core of our side will be full of highly technical passing footballers, arguably the best set in the league if we can get Kagawa performing to his dortmund standard, Carrick having another season where he was clearly the leagues standout man in his role and Thiago being Thiago.

Yeah im sure im gonna get a fuck ton of abuse for this post but it would be nice if one of use could debate my points to? mainly if we're such an horrific kick and rush down the flanks team why were our highest assisting players all centrally positioned players? and how did we win the league so easily given our wingers all had shocking seasons whilst according to this forum being our only avenue of attack? something dosnt add up there.

Anyway sorry to take this slightly off track, really hoping we get Thiago, outstanding player, can see why barca fans are mortified at the prospect of losing him, every single one ive read would rather lose fabregas and see this guy as Xavis natural successor, high praise.
Utd are not a kick and rush team. They are a club who have always been known for their wing play which is a big contrast to the barcelona and Spanish Tiki-Taka midfield possession game.

Both can be exciting and effective.

12 months ago, Utd bought Kagawa, an exciting creative midfielder from Dortmund, and initially they tried to integrate him into their team at the expense of one of their wingers. It didn't really work and they dropped that and went back to playing with a light midfield and two wingers at the expense of Kagawa who I think started in less than half Utd's League games.

Thiago is one of the best young midfielders in the game. If Utd sign him surely they are not going to do so to play 30 yard diagonal balls out wide to the wingers in the way that Scholes used to do, and in the way that Rooney did for you last season.

If Thiago is to play in the same way that he does for Barca and Spain it means Utd will need to drop one of their wingers.

No doubt Thiago is one of the best young players in the game but for Utd to make the most of his strengths they will have to change their game. That's dangerous, and it wont happen without hiccups. Very dangerous for a new manager to do that. Ferguson couldn't do it last season when he had Kagawa. Could Moyes do it this season? He will have two top midfielders in Kagawa and Thiago so that makes it a bit easier, but it would make me very nervous if I was a utd fan.

As a City fan I want Utd to sign Thiago because it means that you are not only changing the manager, but probably changing your approach all at the same time.

I think he will fit in to whatever system you play. He's good enough to adapt to anything.

No idea what system Moyes will play, though. I can't imagine he will keep the same tactics he did at Everton, else his days at United will be very short.

Thiago will spend 2 years at United.. And then he'll be back at Barca replacing Xavi.

This is basically the Piqué situation all over again for them.
