This is the key. He may prefer Barca, but can they afford him?

When have Barca ever paid the going rate?

I can't see Milan selling him on the cheap because he wants to go to Barca. Plus they want Tevez, which could work in our favour.

Could be like Sanchez though. Accept what Barca are offering because it's the only place he wants to go and thus really the only offer on the table. We could have 20m cash and Tevez with a pink bow on but its worth sod all if he says it's Barca or nowhere. Presume in that case he'll just stay put as AC aren't going to do a lot of rebuilding with 20m.

Hopefully a crucial difference from Sanchez maybe that he only wanted to go to Barca whereas Silva may be happy to go to Barca or us?...we will see...?

Indeed.. Though I wouldn't be surprised to see Roman throw 40m at him either..

Alves, Villa, Dmytro Chygrinsky who they bought 25m Euros. I don't think Thiago Silva is the type of player to drag his heels. I think he will go to the club offering most to Ac milan wasn't he discussing terms with PSG until AC pulled the plug.

I remember reading on here that Robinho recommended Silva to Hughes and we could have had him for £3m before Milan signed him up. A Kompany and T.Silva partnership could have had three full seasons together under their belt.

Have AC Milan and Silvio Berlusconi pulled off a PR masterstroke with the Thiago Silva transfer saga?

When Italians aren’t busy with Bunga Bunga parties and match-fixing, they occasionally do football – and every once in a while, they do it quite well.

This is especially true in the case of AC Milan, who currently possess one of the world’s classiest defenders in the form of Thiago Silva.

Milan, of course, have a history of producing great stoppers, with Paolo Maldini, Franco Baresi and Alessandro Costacurta just a few of the legendary names to have worn the famous Rossoneri shirt with distinction over the years.
Thiago Silva Thiago Silva was on the verge of moving to Paris Saint Germain for an eye-popping £37million

But while that celebrated trio played well into their retirement days at the San Siro, Thiago Silva – a man bang in his prime at 27 – was on the verge of being sold to nouveau riche Paris Saint Germain for an eye-popping £37million.

While that figure would have represented a world record fee for a defender, it was the very public and drawn out nature of the negotiations, culminating in the eventual U-turn from Milan, that became the most intriguing part of this surreal story.

The money on the table for Thiago Silva was an amount no club in their right mind should be able to refuse for a defender – especially a club with the debts of Milan

It’s no secret that the Italian giants are in the red financially, and speculation began mounting at the end of last season that they would be forced to sell one of their prized assets in order to balance the books.

As the weeks went on, Thiago Silva’s name continued to pop up in transfer gossip columns, until it became clear that Ligue 1 side PSG were in negotiations for the Brazilian.

The deal, of course, has now been squashed by Milan’s famed leader Silvio Berlusconi, who rode in on his white horse to save the day at the 11th hour – practically his words, not mine.

‘The old heart of Silvio Berlusconi has allowed us to reject this offer,’ the man himself gallantly proclaimed.

But this decision begs the question: is there really no fool like an old fool? Or has the wily media tycoon pulled off yet another PR masterstroke?

The money on the table for Thiago Silva was an amount no club in their right mind should be able to refuse for a defender – especially a club with the debts of Milan.

Yes, the fallout from players and fans would have created a temporarily uncomfortable atmosphere around the San Siro, but the club would have gone on and more than likely found an able deputy for the man who was bought for just £8million from Fluminense.

However, with Milan unlikely to be able to do much business in the transfer market without selling one of their stars, and with impatient fans and players starting to get tetchy about this; isn’t the euphoria of finding something you thought you’d lost almost equal to buying that big shiny new toy?

The reaction of Milan fans after the Thiago Silva announcement was made suggests it might be, and it seems ‘king of spin’ Silvio may just have gone and done it again.

Once a politician, always a politician.

Anyone know much about this Dede guy?

He's supposedly being lined up by milan to replace silva and at 23 for 12 million he could maybe be worth a punt. That said I no nothing about him as a player but I'd rather us get the next silva and ease him in as opposed to spending 40 million on the finished article.

Bit early in the transfer window to be pulling that sort of stunt. The euphoria of keeping the player will wear off in a week, then there's 2 more months of screaming for new players that will never come. Not to mention the increased outcry when he's sold to Barca or us for even less than 37m :P

Being reported by AC Milan News that Silva signed new contact until 30 June 2017 for €6m per year.

One door shuts and another opens...
