What's wrong with just mentioning "it would have been my mum / dad / goldfish's birthday today had they still been alive".

Was at a social gathering a few months back and someone said they had 5 children here on earth.....
Straight away I said "how many do you have on other planets?"
And the reply was "we have 2 in heaven who are no longer with us" and I dug a hole and climbed in ha ha
