Most people in Germany, and many other countries allowed others to suffer in order to better their own existences

Although they may not have pulled the trigger they lived in fear of being next to die and acted with no courage whatsoever.

There were tens of thousands who stood firm and died because of it and I only hope that I would be amongst their number but who ever knows.

The French Vichy is an extension of the German populations' reaction.

Here in the UK we had a history of not giving in under such threats and we fought.

It is of course the values of the society you live in that firstly forms and then shapes your own actions in response to events.

The very different reactions to the Fascist parties across Europe in the 30's and 40's says it all.
