This Cesspit of a City

For me, in spite of the hard-on that many posters discernibly have for prison, apart from the most dangerous of offenders, it doesn’t work. Locking someone up in a building is essentially a Victorian notion that people blindly assume is the only effective way to deal with offenders. Why is it, with advances in technology, we can’t think of more creative and socially helpful means of punishing people and restricting their liberty?

There is clearly a huge social problem in this country around litter and waste. Not just in city centres, but also on verges next to all sorts of roads up and down the country. It’s shameful the way that otherwise law abiding people dispose of their litter. I frequently have the piss taken out if me for my car resembling a skip, but that’s partly because I refuse to dispose of waste otherwise than in a responsible fashion. I’m far from perfect in terms of my environmental impact because I consume large amount of foodstuffs and drinks that are packaged in plastic, but I refuse to dispose of that packaging in a way that is antisocial and inconsiderate.

It cannot be beyond the wit of man to engage offenders in a national programme with the purpose of cleaning up the litter from this country, with any offender unwilling to engage facing further restrictions on their liberty. This would go some way towards them genuinely make a real effort to repay a debt to society, something that simply sticking them in a cell manifestly fails to do. The technology is there to monitor this programme closely, it just needs the political will to see it through.

Obviously GDM you see the impact prison has on criminals but from speaking to quite a few Police officers Its widely accepted prison is not ideal for rehabilitation but does offer communities and individuals a respite from the misery these people cause to their lives.

Also I wonder if the victims of crime would be less likely to pursue prosecutions and cooperate with the police if those individuals would be less likely to be removed from the community.

Agree about clearing the rubbish but I guess the man hours for guards, organisation of the programme and political fall out if prisoners absconded make it a bit of a no go.

One bugbear for me... and it’s not really in the city afaik.. more the outlying areas... is the constant and repitive trashing of glass bus shelters.

Driving past one shelter irregularly in the course of a year..must have been a pile of glass about 10 times :-(

Mate that is very depressing.
Eventually the council will scrap the shelter idea and everyone will get piss wet through when it rains thanks to some scroats.

I think there must be a threshold limit, as one of them has turned into a grey ugly monolithic structure, after so many trashing.

One day there were 4 stops in a row, trashed.

If you crap on and trash your own environment , there’s clearly wider social issues going on.
...and a general SEP (all hail the Douglas Adams appropriation) attitude.

The SEP is generally my issue, be it vandalism, litter, bingeing throwing up, trashing a kids play park, graffiti, fags out of cars.. it’s all low level stuff... no one dies, no one gets hurt... but it’s a pervasive toxic degenerative sod everyone else effect :-(

Basically if people don't own it, they don't give a flying fuck. I went through Broughton the other week. Fairly new houses and the communal areas that were planted were just one big rubbish tip and full of weeds. I have travelled through Manchester a lot recently with my daughter who lives near the precinct in Salford and it is quite sad how dirty the place is.

If you see somebody dropping litter you should be able to film them (for proof) and then scalp them. For each scalp, the council could pay you a grand. For fly tippers, a scalp and 8 fingers should gain you 5 grand.

I like this, you thought of running for mayor ?

It feels very recent though and we've been under conservative rule for ages
Sorry mate , I was being sarcastic. This City has been under Labour control forever but any problems they blame the big bad Tories, the council are allowing the City centre to sink in its own filth & your guess is as good as mine as to why .

Sorry mate I'm terrible with sarcasm when I'm tired

At the end of the day most cities are pretty horrible places with very few exceptions and most are getting more unpleasant as time goes on. Manchester is a shithole but so are most if not all the other cities in the UK and indeed a very large majority in Europe.
