Thoughts on the start to the season? | October thoughts (p12)

Could be better. We never turned up against Spurs, to be honest. Against Brighton, we were okay-ish until we conceded the equaliser. We seemed to implode after that. Today? We probably didn't do enough to win the game, but to concede so late is very annoying. We don't seem to get many late goals lately (Nunes against Villa being the last really late important goal that I can remember).

Significant drop off in level of the squad overall.

Some of the players either cant or are not ready to play the way Pep wants.

Keep playing Khusnov at right back. - streets ahead of other options we have there at present and then go and buy a right back January.

If Rodri can get back to his level then we will be ok. .....

No creative outlet on the right hand side is a problem as well......When Cherki is back Id be very tempted to play him wide right and keep Foden central....

Lots of fight in the squad which is encouraging to see

Reijnders looks like he is a decent player but needs to get upto speed.

Alt Nouri has a fight on his hands to play at left back......first few games he was very poor and Id argue if he had been at left back today we would have lost that game vs Arsenal.

think we could make top 4 but thats about it

For me I am pleased with the new style of football we are implementing, it seems more didrect and Haaland gets more involved. I actually think Pep is prepping us for the next manager.. No one else can do Pep style football so I am glad seem to be planning well for the future, and getting the results, more or less.

I am looking forward to exciting season based on what I have seen.

Our worst return after five league games of a campaign since 2006-07 under Stuart Pearce, but at least we battered The Rags.

13/15 from the next 5 minimum, no excuses.

It would take another one of Pep's signature 15+ match winning streaks to win the title this season. I don't see that happening ever again. That being said, I texted my dad about Donnaruma being an amazing upgrade 30 seconds before he let that goal in, so hopefully I eat my own words again. Also, it seems like one of the only times our back was near the center circle we collapsed like we did 10+ times last season. Teams have learned how to score against that tactical gamble and he needs to give up on it.

Losing the matches against Brighton and Spurs was undoubtedly disappointing.

I feel that the team has a lot of growth in front of it as we have relatively few players who are both at an optimal age and premier league experienced. All our forwards are young and a fair chunk of our current starting backline as well.

Although I feel that at the moment one of Liverpool or Arsenal are a bit more likely to win the title than we are I certainly haven't written it off and look forward to watch a young and inexperienced team hopefully mature as the season progresses.

Happy enough with the start, especially with the Napoli win in the mix. Think something good is coming. Spurs/Brighton disappointing but other than that more than ok. Were not gonna win the league this year anyway.

On paper, we've had a fairly tough start considering the number of new players

Wolves, Spurs, Brighton, United (still a derby!) and Arsenal

7 points from 15 not ideal for where we should be, but fully expect us to win our next few games and will be disappointed if we don't

Lets have a revisit of where we are after 10 games

It's been a mixed bag for me but with more positives than negatives.. Spurs and Brighton was frustrating and looked like a carry on from last season. However, Wolves, United, Napoli and Arsenal have shown a combination of our 'old' style and this new more direct style which looks far better for Foden, Doku and Haaland.

Rodri coming back is colossal for us. Without him we're never winning a title but he's so good and will only get better. O'Reilly looks a better left back than anyone else we've had there for a while and Khusanov looks like a right back! Donnarumma is a proper goalkeeper and has instantly tightened up our defence. Pep looks like he's learning from last season which is good and suggests he's fired up for this season.

The new players from January and summer are still settling in/injured I guess, but if I'm honest I'm still a bit underwhelmed with that group as a whole for what we've paid.

I guess the big question is: will we win any of the big trophies based on what we've seen so far? If I'm honest I think we're a season off a proper title bid but I think we'll be closer than last year. The CL is a lottery but if Pep can mix the direct/passing up a bit then we're a match for anyone on the day. Maybe if Pep can see some seeds of potential this year he might stay a bit longer?

It's a 6/10 for me...

On reflection, about right, on paper.

Two tough games - Brighton and cheating Arsenal away.
Two relatively easy games - Wolves (a) and the rags at home.
And Spurs, whom we only seem to beat, when the result actually matters.

Looking at the five fixtures, I’d say I expected to beat Wolves, lose to Spurs and cheating Arsenal and secure a point at Brighton.
The derby is never a result you can predict, especially with the favourable officiating they receive.

So, I’d say we are right on target.

The win over Napoli was also a hard one to predict, considering our poor performance in the Champions League last season, so the victory was very welcome.

Ignoring all the waffle from outsiders and so called experts and pundits I think the club decided to sacrifice a season or two in return for becoming the first ever club to win 4 in a row. Let me explain. Always in our case and never for other title winners have I heard the words uttered after their first title win you have to go and win it again to prove you really are a great team. Of course it was all said to increase the pressure on us. When we won it twice, the narrative changed to could we win a treble, anything to deflect from a second successive title win. Then after that momentous Istanbul night the question arose was it really a better treble than the rags? So the accolades that should have followed each title win have in my opinion never been fully appreciated and we've never been afforded a complete blanket press coverage of our achievements.

After the third title win we were faced with the unknown question could a club win a 4th Premiership title on the bounce. This was our Everest moment without a Sherpa for guidance and at this point I think a lot of us thought the team might start to be dissolved, players sold on and new ones brought in. Younger legs, hungry for success to go again in a season or two, and to be honest it was more expected and nobody would have questioned it. However City turned that thought process on its head and by and large went again. I spoke to a player at the start of that 4th title season and he told me the players had come back and wanted to do it again, they had the drive and the hunger but it was understandably more difficult both mentally and physically.

We did the unthinkable, they became legends, the club broke all the previous records, we did something that had never been done, ever in 135 years of English Football since the first ever title win and yet still they have tried to tarnish us with 115 charges etc. So whilst we have had our battles on the pitch we have been fighting every bit as hard off it and I personally think its been an incredible achievement by everyone at the club over those 4 title winning years that will remain unsurpassed. Imagine the rags or the scousers doing similar.

Which brings me to now. We will never know if the players were available we wanted at the time but the decision to go for the 4th title with the same set of players with just about having enough gas left in the tank, has impacted us harder in the short term. Instead of a more fluid changeover and integration of new players we are now left with a bigger and more noticeable impact over a shorter period. Too many old players gone at once and too many new players easing their way into Peps pattern of play. There were Peps personal issues to add to the mix and last year we really were burnt out no doubt about it so the transition really only starts now. But would anyone of us had done it differently after that incredible 4 in a row?

We've had a mixed start over the 5 games so far but there are plenty of great signs for the future. The whole defence and their back slapping of every block reminds me of how we were a few seasons ago. And you build success on your defence. We have been hit by a number of injuries so the squad over the last 3 games has performed beyond expectations for me. Noteable performances from some players that were questioned last season and today showed the spirit of the camp is unquestioned. I'll take a top 4 spot and anything in the cups and when I look at the new North stand and the hotel im comforted by the fact that this club doesn't stand still on or off the pitch and are building for the future and for continued success. Let's enjoy the ride!

100% agree.

We've had a good week and hopefully it gets better from here on but it's still a poor start. 7 points from 15 isn't good enough, we're level with united who we all think are on the verge of sacking yet another manager.

Better start than I thought we'd have given our injury list. Clearly a transitional season but, barring yet more catastrophic injuries, I think we'll be well.placed to launch an assault on the title next season.
