Thoughts on the start to the season? | October thoughts (p12)

In like for like fixtures last season, we are 4 points better off and at least 8 goals towards the goal difference.

There are 33 games to go, and we've a truck load of injured players to welcome back in the next 4-8 weeks.

I'd say its been a good but could have been better start, but Nunes being Nunes against Brighton cost us a point as did Pep with well lets just say another Pep brainfart.

First 11 looks decent. It’s the bench that looks weak.

Need the injured players back asap. We still look light to me.

Agree with that, but phase 2/3 of our transition is much easier. We have a good group, a lot of youngsters. The next stage is the cut throat calls on who we clear out to bring quality in. That's a lot easier now we have generally offloaded those entering the end of their careers.

If Nico and Nunes don't perform then out the door they go. Same for Savinho potentially.

But having Cherki and Marmoush available today might have given us that outlet on the counter we needed to survive the game.

Agree with all those points.

We need better than the 3 mentioned in the middle bit for me. Much better.

Listening to Pep he is clearly saying that the team tactically isnt ready..too many new players who need to learn the systems and that will take time.
He also says we are not a team built to play on the break week in and out.

Its clear that this is going to be a transition season...from that i think our aim is top 4 of the league at best. Cup runs are another thing and we might sneak something in one or more of them

Its just how long Pep wants to take to rebuild this team....? Will he see it out or is the club building for the next manager really?

You'd hope and expect so. United have actually had a harder start than us and everybody is saying they've had a poor start. To be level on points with them means we can't look at it as anything other than a poor start and just have to hope we improve from here on.
Utd were a dodgy pen and keeper brain fart away from being a billion pound Wolves at the bottom

It's interesting. Pep is going through a big change and it's going to be a privilege to watch. Maybe it will result in trophies, maybe not, but still really exciting as last season we looked stale.

Foden is back, Rodri is fit, Haaland and Doku have gone up a level.

Nobody will want to play City.

Is that a question?

It doesn't really matter if comparing starts.
we were not great start of last season we got results.

We have played better against tougher opposition to start this season. Yes opponents matters

Last season in the same fixtures we got

3 points in those fixtures vs 7 this season
Scored 4 vs 9 this season
Conceeded 10 vs 5 this season

Season is long

The equivalent games were mainly in the slump last season, not the start. We dropped points to everyone in the slump when normally we wouldn't.

We used to hit Spurs and utd for 5 and 6, doesn't mean that is the benchmark. The thread is on the first 5 games, we have had good, bad and average so far. Improving on 2 results in the worst run in a generation, is an improvement, but it isn't against a meaningful benchmark. Looking at the table shows where we are.

I'm not keen on comparing the points taken against what we took last season, as teams changes YoY, some get markedly worse and some drastically improve

Ive rather review it with my eyes and what I think is going on; and i genuinely think that this season we will be a far better, more competitive side than last season

There seems to be a lot more character about us this season. Rodri coming back and then signing of Donnarumma will be huge for us; two massive characters who simply do not want to lose, and that will rub off on the younger players which can only bode well for the future

Hopefully O Reilly and Khusanov are ok for next weekend, as I'd keep playing the same side until Marmoush and Cherki are back fit

We will have no trouble finishing top 4, and tbh I wouldn't be surprised if we finished 2nd once we get some consistency

steady if unspectacular

got two of the hardest games out of the way
utd i know are bobbins but its always seems to be tough even when we got six they still managed 3
and arsenal away the hardest we'll play apart from the graveyard

Very encouraged by yesterday, young players like O’Reilly, Khusanov, Gvardiol really standing up under pressure. Arsenal are a really good team now, if you can bring Eze, Saka and Martinelli off the bench you have some squad. But with injuries and two days less rest we held them away from home, and very nearly won. It’s not going to click overnight, but the signs are there.
