Thoughts on the start to the season? | October thoughts (p12)

Personally pleased with our start, aside from the Brighton and Spurs games.

I think Donnarumma coming in has made a lot of the squad lift their heads and put their chests out and have some belief in themselves and each other.

That’s the rags and Arsenal games which we have done better in this season than we did last season. Look loads better and the mentality is miles above what it was last season too.
Yep, the spirit shown vs arse was exemplary.

The spurs result I wasn’t too fussed over I’d rather lose the first game early. The Brighton one is the one that stung. We should have killed that game off. The other results have been very good. Like Pep said in his post match presser atm it isn’t about the results it’s about city rediscovering their spark again. Being hard to beat and competing in the big games.

As I expected, up and down..but I feel we are much better than last season, and I expect us to go on a bit of a run of wins now

Huge signs of improvement and quick switching of styles of play around different opponents, flexible, should be a very good season.

What everyone seems to have totally overlooked is that we had zero pre-season. We would normally have 4-5 games to get up to speed, we have that under our belts now and you can see the improvement. Get 13-15 points out of the next 5 and we will be on a run

Don't think we'll worry Liverpool too much in the league, i think they'll stroll to the title again.
I think we'll improve as the season goes on though, maybe finish 3rd or 4th and could win a cup.

The start has been ok, not fantastic but not terrible either.

I believe the team are improving. The application shown by the players is top notch. Their on-field relationships are developing and I am looking forward to seeing the team improve further as the season goes on.

Pep is adapting our style and tactics to the players we have and the park the bus/long ball game of many of our opponents.

The new players are starting to fit in nicely.

Doku running through the inside forward channels is causing chaos.

Phil is refinding himself.

Rodri is back and getting fitter and stronger with every game.

Erling has more space.

We look strong in central defence.

Khusanov is starting to be trusted to play the Walker "get back quick" role and Big Donna is a wall.

We've had some tricky fixtures and timings especially Arse away on Sunday after Napoli on Thursday but did well.

We're getting there.

The equivalent games were mainly in the slump last season, not the start. We dropped points to everyone in the slump when normally we wouldn't.

We used to hit Spurs and utd for 5 and 6, doesn't mean that is the benchmark. The thread is on the first 5 games, we have had good, bad and average so far. Improving on 2 results in the worst run in a generation, is an improvement, but it isn't against a meaningful benchmark. Looking at the table shows where we are.
We always drop points to United and Spurs
Wolves have been a difficult team in the past
The only walk in the park historically has been Brighton

The title says thoughts on the start of the season nothing about the actual statistics. The thoughts are we played CWC, short of fitness, we usually start slowly, we are gelling the team and we played bogey teams/strong teams.

Chelsea have also been patchy this season they also played CWC.

Liverpool should have dropped at least 4 points they have been lucky.

Arsenal had so many advantages in the fixture against us. Less injuries, more rest, easier fixture Bilabo without (Laporte and Williams and patchy form) we played unbeaten Napoli. The ref was very favourable towards the arse.

I am happy with the start all things considered and it will most likely show in the next 5 fixtures.

Haaland and Doku will tear the coming teams apart.

Very encouraged by yesterday, young players like O’Reilly, Khusanov, Gvardiol really standing up under pressure. Arsenal are a really good team now, if you can bring Eze, Saka and Martinelli off the bench you have some squad. But with injuries and two days less rest we held them away from home, and very nearly won. It’s not going to click overnight, but the signs are there.
They spent so much money if they don t win the league it is an embarrassment. Agree with you when we start clicking it could be really fun.

We have a tricky start in terms of fixtures. Compared to last season’s equivalent first 12 matches we took 12 points from the same fixtures (substituting Burnley for Ipswich). We are 4 points up and gone from a goal difference of-9 to +4.

We are very obviously in transition but definitely positive signs especially considering our lack of preseason and injuries to Cherki, Marmoush, Ait Nouri and Kovacic. They would have been great options off the bench as we tired yesterday. Hopefully Khusanov and O’Reilly are ok.

I think most of us know where we are.
We are not title-challengers this season, for well-discussed reasons.
This year is about progression, and we are seeing some green shoots.
We have some SERIOUSLY talented young players.

Apart from the 2nd halves vs Spuds and Brighton I thought we've been fine, Burnley.and Brentford are a 6 point must
