the only reasons I can think of for the scum not being able to sign anyone in Jan are:

1. Transfer Embargo as punishment for the Berbatov saga. No complaint, no chance.

2. Financial
a: Knock on from AIG problems. Would have been be a good bit of gossip yesterday.
b: Problems with the Glazers' financing of the club. Hardly news, but maybe combined with a:.... hmmmm, yep, I that's my bet.
