Seems we have 3 camps now. Those who say stay off the pitch, those that say it’s OK, it’s a one off and don’t be a miserable fucker and those that say “There’s more to come”. “ The Brighton game is a cert for the mother of all pitch invasions.”. That is the problem. Once certain fans have tasted blood there is no stopping them. The poster who said it ain’t gonna happen, how are you going to stop them. We will be in the shit if it happens again particularly,if the stewards try to stop it and one of them gets injured.
These are rational comments but unfortunately, as we all know we are not all rational and we cannot cherrypick the laws and rules that only apply to City fans as we are “special”. The yob element who will want to get on at all costs because the laws don’t apply to them will end up costing us big if it happens again this season.Today's the anniversary of our first League title in 1937 and guess what? City fans celebrated with a pitch invasion. It's City, it's what we do. It ensures the club and fans remain grounded and remember that success actually matters to us. The day it stops (or turns nasty) is the day City becomes just another successful club. If it was good enough in 1904 for Meredith's side; good enough in 1937 for Barkas, Swift, Brook et al; good enough at Newcastle in 68 followed by Allison stopping the traffic and dancing in the streets; good enough for Mancini's team and Pellegrini's then it's good enough now. Major successes deserve major recognition and TV companies and fans around the world will have seen our fans celebrating like it actually mattered. People have praised Liverpool fans for their intimidating atmosphere which can so clearly end in injury or worse, but celebratory pitch invasions by City fans are different. They're positive, fun and build connections between the team, club and fans.
I do think though that we've done it now for this season. Huddersfield can be the trophy presentation and the professional orderly display needed and Brighton can be our send off to any players who may not be here next season. Pitch invasions have to be spontaneous, not planned and Huddersfield and Brighton pitch invasions are just not worth it. It adds nothing but negativity in my opinion to do it again.
We got on and we sit in the South 3rd tier, got the lift down and walked straight passed the stewards on the gates. The kids loved it got some great pics.
Would it be possible in future for a fans group and the club to pre-agree an orderly pitch "invasion". An agreement that nobody will go onto the pitch until all the players have left and opposing fans in the bottom tier are given time to exit stadium. Then, a few minutes after the final whistle, fans are invited onto the pitch to take their pics. Perhaps with a promise that the manager or captain will eventually return to say a few words?
Or is jostling the players essential to the process?
Nah, technically it's illegal, so the club have to make a token attempt to stop it and then apologise to the FA for not being able to identify any of the fans involved. If they agreed it with the fans beforehand they'd lose plausible deniability and be open to some serious sanctions.Would it be possible in future for a fans group and the club to pre-agree an orderly pitch "invasion".
