Today's shooting in America thread

Such a strawman this assault rifle bollocks.

If it looks like a gun, sounds like a gun and kills like a gun, it's a fucking gun. Dead kids don't discriminate between how big the bullets are.

This is really not true at all.

AR-15 style weapons make these events much, much more deadly.

Firstly the damage done by a 5.56mm rifle round compared to a 9mm pistol round is incomparable. The energy transfer alone is 2-3x as much. You can look up videos or images of shooting into ballistic gel from a 9mm pistol vs an AR15 chambered in 5.56 or higher and it’s chalk and cheese.

Secondly penetration - rifle rounds are going to go through breezeblocks and thinner brick walls and classroom doors that pistol rounds will be stopped by.

And the biggest factor of all is the ammunition capacity - 30 round magazines at least vs 8-15 in a pistol and the nature of having a shoulder stock and more weight means you can shoot more rapidly and more accurately.

The Clinton era assault rifle ban conclusively reduced the number of school shootings but also the number and severity of casualties.

Obviously all guns can kill you, but restrictions on AR15 style rifles would reduce the casualties and fatalities so much.

Pretty much Every mass shooting incident the US has involved an AR.

We don't shoot school kids, yet we have gun ownership.

It's not the ownership that is the issue, regulation and control is. There basically isn't any in the US, it's a free for all with no accountability.

It's hard for me to understand why so little effort is put into it, when I myself find simple control and regulation acceptable to work with.
Politics and money.
Politics- The #1 issue for the GQP isn't securing the border or controlling women's bodies it's owning the libs. Everything they do needs to be perceived as insulting to liberals. Striking down existing gun laws is one of the easiest ways to do that and it's even more effective if they do it right after a mass shooting. This is why a few of them want to recognize the AR-15 as our national firearm, the cruelty is the point.
Money- Gaslighting Americans into believing that buying ridiculous amounts of guns and ammo helps to own the libs is a surefire way to separate morons from their money. They've been floating the idea that Clinton, Obama, Biden, Pelosi, Chuck Schumer and every Democrat ever elected to congress are coming for their guns. This causes more people to stockpile weapons and ammo. It also makes stupid, well-armed people more paranoid which leads to more mass shootings which always lead to more lunatics buying guns and ammo. All of that means billions for gun manufacturers and millions for their Super PACs.

Can you imagine living in a country were your kids go to school which us guarded by armed police every day ?
Mental, isn't it? Maybe parents should give their kids a Glock rather than a lunchbox when they wave them off in the morning too. And we've still got a select few heartless arseholes on here suggesting it's not an issue, and that schoolchildren are constitutionally expendable.

Isn’t Idaho a really quiet state with nothing much going on? That would probably be the reason why you haven’t witnessed much crime.

Your last sentence pretty much sums up the typical American response to these shootings.
It was meant as satire, unfortunately some posters get so worked up they can't see it for what it is

As is always the case, any chance of a sensible discussion gets lost in comments like “Chimps with guns” and a lack of understanding of America’s birth and the reason for 2A.

If someone has a magic wand and could “magic away” the roughly 350 MILLION guns in the USA. I’d be all for it. Alas…

If somebody could stop the mentally and criminally insane getting their hands on guns. see above.

However, the biggest problem is that The Constitution has a method for changing, or even removing, 2A, but that mechanism doesn’t stand a chance in todays politically supercharged America. ZERO!

You can nibble at the edges, but that would only create more illegality, and guess who doesn’t care about that? Yes, the criminals.

Lastly, mental health is a crisis in America. People like to talk like America is a COUNTRY of rugged individualists. IT AIN’T! America is a country where far too many people live on the ragged edge, and those of you who have ventured outside the megapolises have surely seen it. Watch an episode of Justified or Yellowstone and you see the hinterlands. Watch almost anything filmed outside a large urban area and you see that America, for all its claims of an advanced society, is more 1923 than 2023 in many places.

Sure, there are rigged pockets of life out west, but Nashville, TN? Not a chance…even though many people there still feel a kinship with the rebel South.

“Get rid of all the guns!” Sounds so easy, especially in countries where when the police and pols say it, the masses hop to it. But, that’s not America and never has been.

The level of distrust in authority is a pandemic born of corruption, and was hard earned. Turning that shop around, yo the point of rescinding 2A is simply unimaginable, regardless of how many grieving mothers we get to watch on TV from outside their child’s supposed safe space for education.

We are fucked and it’s not changing anytime soon.

Such a depressing post in terms of the absence of any hope of change that could prevent thousands of children being murdered.

There are children at home right now across America who are blissfully happy with their mums and dads and brothers and sisters.

Might be tomorrow, might be next month or next year, but those thousands of children are going to be murdered.

And there’s seemingly no appetite to stop it from happening.

I’m not naive enough to think it’s an easy task, but when you’re talking about stopping children being murdered you’d think people would at least give it a go.
