Today's shooting in America thread

I think part of the problem is that the number of people actually affected is an absolutely tiny percentage of the population so there's no political gain to be made from tightening gun control.
Poverty, drugs, corrupt politicians, crime, and various other things will be more important unless you have suffered personally due to lax gun gun laws.
Now isn't the time to legislate as kneejerk reactions produce bad laws, but lawmakers will never have the balls to do something about it as they simply don't want to.

It would hardly be a knee jerk reaction surely as this has been happening for decades?

I’m not sure that’s strictly correct. It’s not just those who are directly affected by these shootings. It must affect everyone in US society. It must be awful to live in a society where that regularly happens and your kids go to school. Imagine the constant worry.

He’s correct about the symptom but hopelessly wrong about the cause. US society is slowly breaking down.
I don’t think it is breaking down. Certainly it is hopelessly divided currently and MAGA has mounted a fierce attack on democracy but mostly US society works as well as such a huge democracy can be expected to do. All democracies have their faults and challenges, the issue is whether there is a quality of leadership to effectively manage them.
Rather a flawed democracy than a rigid dictatorship.

My erstwhile American neighbours emigrated to UK specifically to protect their children.

I was careful with my words. Not falling apart, or disintegrating but slowly breaking down seems about right to me. From where I’m stood it seems so divided.

Agree on your last point though.

The knee jerk excuse is given constantly by right wingers. Given that there is a mass shooting (more than four shot) every week, it will never be the right time.

I wonder if the average American does actually worry about this or not.
