Tokyo 2020 Olympics/Paralympics

Surely out there somewhere there are some tall long limbed men and women who could be trained to throw things. We should put more effort into the field events, much better chance of a good return for a modest outlay.
Don't a lot of them train at Loughborough University? I worked there for a while. Never felt so unfit in my whole life.

Not a golf fan but sat here enjoying the womens individual stroke match, probably at the right levels of chilled out action for the middle of the morning finishing off my rum.

I'm not into golf either, but I could listen to this commentator all day. I wonder if he has a podcast I can go to sleep to.

These thread updates have been really useful, cheers for doing them

Plus we've got past athletes with serious experience of winning medals in those events.
The nearest thing we have to ‘one roof’ - in actual terms - is Loughborough; fabulous facilities there, and many of our top prospects train out of there already - and in financial terms, is the National Lottery funding. It’s not been so obvious this championship, but in the past it has been so cringe to have every post race interview peppered with reference to ‘I really want to thank the national lottery, … and mum and dad etc’. But that said, it has done a decent job.
Outside of Farah & Ennis Hill, and maybe Asher Smith now, I don’t think athletics provides a decent, lasting financial outcome for any of them. What they earn, compared to an also ran on something like the global tennis circus, is not a great deal. Even if Holly had got gold in pole vault, it wouldn’t have meant a massive long term earnings increase imho. Laura ‘she’s a vet you know’Muir, will still be a vet after her silver etc.
In terms of our medal haul, I actually think for the country we are. we do about right.
Our standard of throwing and jumping isn’t great though - our best javelin throwers for example aren’t anywhere even near getting the qualifying standards to enter the global competitions, never mind getting a medal.

Btw mate, before I forget, and as we are nearing the last lap here, can I just say a big thanks to you for this thread and for the daily schedule updates - you’ve done a great job. It’s been a really enjoyable 2 weeks (although I’ll be pleased if I never have to see another bloody dive again).

Have Mexico always had a big diving team? I think they've had divers in every event.
Always associate Mexico with cliff diving.

These Chinese divers are unreal and so consistent. Daley been brilliant so far but he just can’t afford anything other than perfection from now.
