Tokyo 2020 Olympics/Paralympics

That’s a tough one; a mechanical on the chain and your games you’ve waited 5 years for are a gonner.
At least in a cycle event they’d be able to access support or maybe get a bike change. From this punditry sounds like Yee will be favourite if they finish this bike ride as a bunch
I thought that, maybe they could carry replacement equipment like a chain.

I always thought it was a rule that it had to be on terrestrial TV. Let's be honest, who's going to give a shit about the Olympics in the future if it becomes a fully PPV event? Who's going to have heard of any of the Olympians if the only people that watched it were the few hundred thousand who were willing to pay 30 quid to stream it (or more when it's exclusive).

Incidentally, what a load of shit. It's an event in which the athletes aren't paid to compete, everything is largely publicly funded from the infrastructure to the training of the athletes, but then the thing that everyone has paid for is put behind a paywall by some big American corporation.

Reminds me of academia. The public funds it, but if the public wants to read the research, they have to pay a big publisher who contributes fuck all to the process.

Apparently Discovery bought the rights for the whole of Europe including the UK.

Could've killed the Olympics in Europe to be honest. How many people are going to go out their way to subscribe to Discovery plus? To me the beauty of the Olympics is the sheer variety on offer. The ability to flick between a whole host of random sports that take your fancy.

Now all we have is the basic coverage on BBC which covers the basics of the event on a British level. But it's only a tiny bit of the massive event which is the Olympics...

It's a joke. They can afford to pay twats like Lineker over a million a year and pay for documentaries about the rags but they cheap out on the Olympics.

1.4 billion Euros to get the rights to the Olympics for 2016, 2020 and 2024. The beeb couldn't compete with that.

Yeah but that's for all of Europe as far as I can tell. If all the broadcasters throughout Europe chipped in surely they could've easily outbid Discovery?

I know what you mean mate, but I’ve got the Eurosport app, cost £19.99 for 12 months - has every minute of every Olympics event live (and on demand). As well as that every bike race including every grand tour stage in full, advert free.
(Eurosport is owned by discovery).
Talk about value for money, it’s incredible.
As for BBC, they still get more than enough Olympic hours for most people’s taste imho

Alex Yee looking good here, might beat Peaty to the first gold medal.
Good point!

edit.
Imagine being in your brother’s shadow for years, and when you finally get your moment to shine, along comes a young pretender to usurp you.

Fair play sounds like a good choice for you if you like the road racing. I normally get the Eurosport pass for the Le Mans 24 hour race week but I consider that quite a niche event so don't mind paying a little to watch it without any issues.

The Olympics is meant to be the biggest thing in sport though, yet it's mostly hidden away on a couple of apps?
