Tommy Booth - was he any good?

In my time Dave Watson is the best CB we've had.
But Tommy Booth in his prime, and Vincent Kompany are not far behind.

In his last 3-4 years at City Tommy Booth was in and out of the side, sometimes left out for the disappointing Paul Futcher and later for the rampaging Nicky Reid. There always seemed to be something a little bit underwhelming about Tommy in the team, when Dave Watson had been allowed to leave. Was he actually any good in those days? Had he been a lot better in the early 70's?

My Dad said he was like an Ox, made Richard Dunne look soft and was reliable.
Great character to meet now.

It was Tommy again with his swede that nodded the ball back across for Dennis to do his infamous overhead

The month is April 1977, I was 14, and rather than go straight to Maine rd to see city play spurs, I had to visit my mum in hospital with my dad. Fair enough I suppose - she had had a hysterectomy - but I can't say my mind was fully focused on the bedside conversation. Time was passing fast, but eventually we got away - and made it to the ground maybe 20 minutes late. I ran up the steps to the top of the platt lane stand and just as I did so tommy booth rose to head the ball into the back of the net. The first in a 5-0 victory. Will always be my abiding memory of tommy booth

Lived on Langley in Middleton for a while as did Kenny Clements and in the 70's Langley was a large blue stronghold........

Several double deckers used to leave Wood Street on a Saturday for Maine Road.

His family lived on Langley long after Tommy hit the big time and moved to Simister. ;)
His in laws lived on Burnside on Langley and we'd often see him pass our Drive in his sporty orange Ford Escort when he visited them.
Flagged him down once and got him to sign a TB footy card.
I asked him a few years back in the Roebuck in Midd about the Escort, he pissed himself laughing and said he had crashed it years ago.
Top blue Tommy, the real pride of Langley and not that ginger twat.

Also one of the lads told him that I was an exiled blue now living in California, gave him my number and he got the club to call me a couple of days later and arrange a tour of Maine Road. I was a bit embarrassed, but it was the next to last season before it shut and it was nice to see behind the scenes.

Nice one Hollywood, Ken Clements lived there too,not sure where. I spent a lot of time on Langley as my best mates lived on Ullswater and Thursby Walk........great days...

-- Thu Jun 14, 2012 7:00 am --

Also nice touch about the tour of Maine Road that they arranged for you......

can't believe people are comparing lescott to booth.

lescotts got a first touch like a baby elephant compared to booth.

lescotts got to have another 5 seasons like the last.

tommy booth never had 5 bad games for city.
