Tonights Performance!

Some of you haven't been following City for very long

It wasn't great football, but Fulham had every man behind the ball, and pinched the first goal.

Breaking down a determined opposition is part of football, and although it wasn't thrilling, there were reasons for that

De Jong did OK, but I didnt see the point of a defensive midfielder in a game like that where Fulham were very negative. It wasn't hard work which we needed, it was a bit of individual ability, and interplay between the forwards in the final third.

The front 3 flopped. bellamy played well, but tevez struggled.

Thought Hughes nearly lost the game in bringing weiss and Petrov on. That gave Fulham a lot of possession which they had hitherto been denied.

On a positive note I thought Hughes pushing Ireland up at the start of the second half was a very good decision, also Pertrov's corner for the Kolo's goal was a cracker and Petrov missed a tall striker tonight as some of those balls into there box were crying out for some height.

How did our defence do? Were Toure and Lescott comunicating better. How was Zab??

We know our midfield and attack can play, its our defence which is of interest....

In the first half I can only remember one shot on target - and they scored. I thought that Tevez was the only player trying for us.

The second half started well with our goal but then ended up as awful as the first and I was so glad to see the winner in extra time as I hate penalties and wanted to wake up in a good mood tomorrow.

I didn't think Weiss was anything special at all and SWP and Tevez looked jaded very early in the second half. Having said that they had a team full of really tall players and SWP couldn't win anything in the air and was often faced with trying to ge past 2 defenders as they were very well organised.

Really glad to win and now we've got a break to recaharge before next Monday

we'll never hear the end of it if we draw a big 4 team and they beat our 1st side with a weakened team
a top 4 team will come to play football, its harder against teams that just sit back and defend.frustrates players and fans alike

At the end of the day, I'm delighted we got through... It certainly wasn't pretty, but all that matters is the result. In the past we have been saying "well we gave it all and were unlucky not to win" fuck that, lets be honest results are all that matter. I think the likes of Petrov and Weiss should have started (some of our players looked tired and fresh players fighting for a regular start can only add to the performance), but I think it's important they got a run out, we'll need them as the season progresses. I'm hoping for a decent draw and looking forward to still being in the top four come Christmas.
CTID!!!!!

I wasn't impressed tonight.

It was probably one of the most mind-numbingly frustratingly boring games I've seen since last season when we "played" Paris St Germain at home in the Uefa Cup.

It was all the worse considering the investment that went into the current side, and the fact that the two sides are incomparable.

We lacked any form of cohesion, understanding or creativity... in Layman's terms it was fucking dire.

But with that said we're through so there isn't that much room for complaint.

We will however have to raise our game ever so slightly in the next round if we are to bear any hopes of progressing to the latter stages.

Without Robinho and Adebayor we will struggle against sides that sit back and invite you to attack them because they have that extra something on the ball that our other players don't. Against the likes of Arsenal and United we didn't really miss Robinho because Bellamy is good at getting in behind defenders using his pace when we counter attack however he's not a player who will unlock a defence with his passing ability like Robinho can

It wasn't a classic lol.

But they stuck to their game plan well, defended en masse and rarely ventured forward unless on the break. Made it very hard for us.

The crowd was poor but then look at the empty seats at Deepdale who had a potential giant killing opportunity and at the swamp where they used to fill games like that. The Carling Cup is not a crowd-puller until the final stages unless it is a big game..rags/pool whatever. The fact that many teams play their reserves is a factor.

City should introduce a new category D for crappy early Carling Cup matches and FA Cup matches too. Give ST holders the match for free/ £1/ £5. Let them bring along their kids for a quid or an adult for a fiver. Charge everyone else a tenner. Lose money on the gate but make it up at the food outlets/ club store etc. More importantly generate a decent crowd and a better atmosphere and a sense of occasion which will in turn encourage the fans to turn up.

The very fact that the stadium is half full and the atmosphere is flat as a pancake is half the reason that many don't bother to turn up for these games. It's self-perpetuating.

And/or increase the number of loyalty points for these games to around 50.

Radical ideas required.

Some good points made here , Balti.

BTW did anyone find out why there were hoards of armed police guarding a taped off crime scene in the estate across the road from the stadium after the game ?

Not the best game to say the least

but a win is a win and now I'm look forward to the next round draw on Sat.
