Tony Towers?

I quite like their new stadium, in fact I’m off down there in an hour. From what I recall the Goldstone Ground was a right shithole. Got 2 memories of it, first one was a 4 0 battering, the other one was a one nil win with a late Kevin reeves goal and it was absolutely pissing down the whole match and the away end at the lovely goldstone ground had no roof - and iirc it was the game before Luton relegated us
Tbf their new stadium does look good.i agree with you.

Yes. I remember that goal; City were all over Academica but couldn't get the ball in the net. In the final minute, there was a corner and TT smashed the ball home from around about the penalty spot.
I remember that goal very well even after 50 odd years. I t had been a most frustrating night as a result of Academica's "physical" approach. Extra time was ebbing away and in those days the winners were decided by the toss of a coin in the event of a tie. As you say City got a corner literally in the dying seconds. I was stood behind the goal at the other end and when the ball reached Tony I had a perfect view of the "corridor" to the top corner and it was open. It seemed to take an age as his shot speared unerringly into the top corner. Pandemonium at the ground and then on the football special back to town half were trying to get their breath back and half singing an dancing.

Just had that BT Infinity installed and got talking to the lad doing it. Turns out we were at school together in the mid 80's. He started saying how he was only here for 6 months as he moved to Tampa. He then said about how his dad was a footballer and at the end of his career went to America. 'Who was you dad mate?', I asked. 'Tony Towers', he replied.
Went on to say he was here during Marsh's era and Tueart.
Anyone remember him? Actually felt embarrassed when the obvious look of , 'sorry mate never heard of him' was etched on my face!
He’s referenced a few times in the Ian Mellor book I’m reading by the pool. Him being dropped in favour of RodneyMarsh seems to be the reason why we didn’t win the league in the early 1970’s.
Bit before my time though.
