The weirdest thing about paying so much money for Carroll i find, is it's not just a gamble on the pitch, but off it as well. The guy's a convicted criminal already, how long till the next incident?

You might cite Balotelli as a similar gamble, but i don't think he's violent like Carroll obviously is, plus he'll hold his value far better than Carroll because there will always be takers for him back in Italy.

Can't see anyone taking Carroll, if he continues to fail, off Liverpool for more than £10 million.

I think he'll end up at Stoke in a couple of years time....

Not just saying it to have a pop at Liverpool, but the transfer of Andy Carroll for that amount of money was genuinely one of the most bizarre things to happen in the whole Premiership era.

With the inflated market for young English talent, you could perhaps have seen £25m, and while that would still be hugely more than his real worth, with us having paid the same for Lescott as we did for Silva couple of years previously you could have overlooked it as just one of those things in a similar vein - English players attracting a crazy premium.

But THIRTY FIVE FUCKING MILLION is something else. That's £11m more than Silva and only £3m less than Aguero. It's less than we signed Robinho for from Real Madrid when his reputation was at its peak (and that transfer happened in similar circumstances at the eleventh hour too, don't forget), it is £8m more than Dzeko, at least £11m more than Balotelli, 7 or 8 million more than David Villa. For the sixth most prolific goalscorer in the second tier, only the season before the transfer. A season in which his club were scoring for fun.

Liverpool got taken to the cleaners. And then bent over backwards and anally violated behind the cleaners.

Couldn't agree more. I know we've paid some silly fees for players since the takeover but all things considered, the fee for Carroll trumps everything that has gone on before at any club IMO. It's like Liverpool felt they had to go out and spend that kind of money because they were getting £50 million for Torres, and with him leaving perhaps they needed to appease their fans. With no other club interested though, they effectively ended up bidding against themselves.

A better idea would've been to tell Newcastle to forget it, that they weren't desperate, that Carroll was injured anyway, and as such they might be back in the summer when things had died down somewhat. They'd have probably picked him up for £20 million tops if they'd done that.

Not sure the loony toons are in any position to take the piss for a club paying over the odds for a player. Nearly £6m for ''thanks''? Methinks we got the better end of that deal, for a change!
