It was James Brown who I was thinking folks would be kicking themselves for missing given how incredibly influential he was on the entirety of soul/funk, and as an entertainer. But the SDJ shouts are another good one.

I voted for Sinatra #3 and thought he would win. He is the only singer I can think of where I listen for his voice and not the music -- if someone puts Frank on in the background, I never object no matter my mood. But I'm a child of rock and roll so the music matters more.

Likewise but I do place importance on the vocals.

Anyway I had to have one non R'n'R vocalist in my 10 and that was Francis Albert. I placed him at #10 but I think if you were to talk about greatest, he's probably #1.

Didn't vote for him but would class him as my favourite vocalist in his genre. Not surprised he is top 10 but a bit surprised he finished at #1. I guess, like Frank, he transcends his genre.

Hmmmm. It is, really. At the time it was a very big deal. Ask some of these folks.

I don't need to ask some of the folks: I spent 3 months in South Africa in 1983. Saw Elton John in concert at Sun City during that time and he has never been tarred and feathered for it.
