To clarify and simplify the choice in my original post and avoid the 'fourth place' issue, assume 'top four' means we make the group stages next year directly or by way of qualifying round and, if we don't it is United that do.

Not really, after the groups, they won the rounds to the final 5-4 3-1 and 3-2 on agg with only 2 clean sheets

You seriously think that UEFA wouldn't overrule it if that happened? No chance they'd not allow one of their beloved not to play in the tournament next year. We'd either get binned with a sudden rule change or a 5th place would be created.

The rules have changed since Liverpool displaced Everton from 4th by winning it. We'd get 5 English teams if we won it while being outside the top 4. Final. We'll attract quality players with Pep in charge even if we lose it. Those players who only want CL football are possibly not the ones we want.
