Tories have lost the vote of the young generation.

You're the one being an individualist, and yet somehow you can't accept the fact that someone on £15k does not contribute to taxation, they take from it. Yes they pay tax, but they get back far more. So no, someone on £15k is not "paying for my degree."

So how much do I have to earn before I pay for your degree?

true and make them all look bad!
And it's a shame. The idea that often Oxbridge educated, very intelligent, hardworking people go into politics in order to line their back pockets on a miserable £90k a year when they could probably earn 2 to 20 times that in business, is laughable.

They go into politics because they care deeply about our country, and want to do their utmost to make it better.

I'd put 600+ MPs in this category. And a few backstabbing slimeballs ruin the reputation of all of them.

'They get back far more' .. such as? Being taken care of when they're sick?
Yes, by a qualified doctor who only got a medical degree because their training was subsidized massively by the state.

Obviously individual circumstances vary, but economists suggested that as an average, you have to be in the top 40% of earners in the UK (2010/11) before you're actually a net contributor to taxation. Of course that might be more for people with kids, less for single people and pensioners skew the figures somewhat, but someone on £15k is not really in this vague area.

Top 40% of earners in 2010/11. It might be slightly different now, but not by much.

It showed that the top 40pc of households, ranked by earnings, carried the burden. The lower-earning 60pc are net beneficiaries of the system, taking more back in benefits than they contribute in the many forms of tax to which we are all subject.

The point at which a household switches from being an overall “taker” to a “giver” is where disposable income, after all taxes and benefits are taken into account, passes a threshold of about £27,000, Smith & Williamson found. This would be where a household’s gross income fell somewhere between £35,000 and £38,000.

yeah the role has taken a bad name now!

In our test case that this relates to the guy earns 2.4 million quid. Can he afford to pay it back yes, can he afford a pension yes, can he get a house in Cornwall yes?

As a labour supporter is it unreasonable in your view to tax him at 50%? If yes how much over 40 years extra would that be? For 2.4 million how much do you think he should contribute to society because of his earnings and free education. You can dress it up whatever way you like but in your view of social responsibility under the Tories and paying back his student fees he will pay less than a labour government.

Rich guy with a degree he is doing us a favour, rich guy without one pay us more money you selfish ****. Not ironic at all. Do you pay for a privileged lifestyle or not? Make your mind up fellas.

enjoy your fantasy Dr Evil won't you

So those who do the shit jobs.. are they jobs that don't need doing? Are they not contributors to society? You can't very well have one without the other. We should invest in people, that is the game, that is progression, but low paid jobs still need filling I'm sure you'd agree.

Absolutely, I agree. I don't think that someone's contribution to society is measured by their income, but hilts wanted to make this about individuals "paying for you to do your degree" so that's the logical conclusion of that way of thinking.

What's your obsession with people earning a fortune? Most people with degree earn only marginally more than those without degrees.

How can that be true when the argument for free uni is that an educated society helps us all and they pay more tax which cover their education. If most never pay it back then maybe just maybe too many are going and the value for money isn't there. I don't agree with the way it's done it certainly needs tweaking but should everyone who fancies it get 30k of education plus no fucking way.

You either believe those that benefit from society give back or you don't.

If someone says here's some cash to get you started if it helps you financially pay it us back if not no problem. That's not the worst life deal you will be offered. Argue about the detail not the principal.

using the argument that several people espouse on here - as we are not officially at war just part involved in a few skirmishes can we not disband the armed forces as I object to my taxes being wasted on them. Oh and I NEVER take a train can we stop paying towards rail please? I'll suspend my NHS contributions until I am sick and as my kids are no longer of school age can I stop funding those fucking schools now please?

Quite a few on here will see that as a rational argument amazingly
