Total Premiership spending....

Re Pompey - quite so, TLOB.

Spurs/Arsenal are an interesting case, agreed.

Though I would maintain that you have to include wages to get the true picture. They are at least as important as fees, in fact probably more important. And arse are less parsimonious with wages than with transfer fees.

Part of the answer is, in Pompey's case, to regard the reported figures with extreme suspicion.

Spurs have spent a fair bit haven't they? I suppose that's what happens though when you sell your squad and then buy it all back a year later.

the thing I find amazing is that Spurs and Liverpool have spent in total £200m more than Arsenal over a sustained period of time and yet they have very little to show for it.
Ramos ballsed it all up though. Why they got rid of Jol I'll never know. That set them back a season at least.

frightening really the amount of poppy you have to spend just to get competitive in the prem.
just shows the mid table and below brigade have absolutely no chance of succeeding

Premiership Transfer Profit(since 1997/98):

Manchester United -£214,380,000.
Chelsea -£501,102,000.
Liverpool -£223,158,600.
Arsenal -£27,958,500.
Everton -£47,970,000.
Aston Villa -£140,148,000.
Tottenham -£298,642,500.
Man City -£331,188,300.

Any other clubs you want?

The problem with this info is that, back when the premiere league started you could buy a top top player for much less money...inflation has rocketed, especially recently...consider that we spent 20 odd mil on lescott, and back in 1996 Alan Shearer was bought for £15mil....so if the prices had been the same then rags would have probly spent near to a billion, becuase for years they were the team that spent the most money on players

Can someone help me out with an argument vs a rag?

Im looking for stats on us + 'the big four'-total spending (on tansfer fees) over the following periods

1 year

3 years

5 years

10 years

Since the prem started

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Right mate! Uniteds total spend on players since 92/93 324.54m. Give or take a bit. City's total spend for the same period 316.14m. However there are a few discrepencies with both totals because some players i couldnt find a transfer fee for so if you find these and add them on their respective totals. UNITED-Erik Nevland,Anderson,Kuszczak,Nani,Manucho,Z Tosic. CITY-Bernardo Corradi,Valeri Bojinov,Vedran Corluka,Shay Given,Nidel de jong,P Zabaletta,Tal ben haim,C Tevez. Have to say that we have spent a hell of a lot on a lot of crap if im honest some off the players we have bought is crazy looking back. hope this helps m8.

-- Mon Jun 07, 2010 10:13 pm --

Some other clubs transfer profits:

Portsmouth +£16,276,500.
Leeds -£20,533,500.
Newcastle -£135,072,000.

It really does beggar belief how Pompey can have made a £16m profit in transfers over the last decade yet still be in their current financial meltdown, they must have been paying wages and signing on fees that were astronomical.

United paid over the odds back then just like City are doing now, so that's evened out.

This means nothing without taking inflation into effect.

In 1989 United paid a paltry £2.3m for Gary Pallister, whereas in 2009 we blew £24m on Joleon Lescott. Is it fair to compare the two fees side by side?

What this doesn't take into account is that in 1989 that was 'the national record for a defender at the time, as well as being the highest fee between British clubs and the second highest fee to be paid by a British club'.

United under Ferguson blew everyone out of the water consistently over 20 years. Until Chelsea started to outbid them they were the biggest spenders in Europe every close season. They bought their success more than anyone.

We have spent a major wedge of inflated fees in three seasons to transform us from a relegation team to a title challenging team. In real terms it comes nowhere near what they've spent to buy their success.

but how do you judge what that rate of inflation is?
