touring scotland in a mobile home

It's a beautiful place with lots of areas where you can be away from crowds, but I wouldn't fancy a winter in a can on wheels up the north of scotland

Hey mate i have done it numerous times and its amazing, the Midge problem can be horrific though and they laugh at any repellent, the west coast is far superior to the east coast although the Cairgorms are a must stop over, Aviemore/Glenmore and Grantown on Spey are beautiful, have you joined the Caravan club because if so Bunree site is an absolute must, caravan club also has a site in Edingburgh if you plan on seeing the capital, the camping club has a great site at Glenmore right on the banks on the loch and they also have a nice site at Culzean castle which is great

Why?

Beautiful places and ideal 'getaway' from people locations.

Beautiful places, absolutely. Ideal to visit, without a doubt. But they get as mobbed as the rest. Even off-season, which isn't the case for all others.

Beautiful place but I cant stand Midges so only go in the spring & autumn & usually to Dumfries & Galloway which is not as dramatic as the north but still beautiful & seems to have less Midges?

For places to stay (laybys, parking, pubs etc) get the Park4Night app.
There are others as well like SearchForSites.
There's also apps that show where you can get gas, water.
There's a chargeable(?) booklet/website called BritStops which also has other places to stay - eg pubs, that will cost nothing other than a price of a meal in the pub.

Most people you'll see there are from cruise ships and only in Lewick and Kirkwall.

I've spent a lot of time over the years in both locations, and although it's getting busier, if you are away from the 2 main towns then it's still peaceful.

Done high season touristy things there, like Sumburgh lighthouse on Shetland mainland for instance. 2 other couples. All the puffins you could eat. There were about 20 of us last time i was in Skara Brae. Not exactly packed.

Hardly ever saw another car in Shetland further north. Like a different world.

S4S is amazing, Britstops however you have to buy the book, it's about £30 every year
