There’s a campsite at Arisaig, run of the mill, but the views, the scenery and the beach are unbelievably beautiful and at dusk it takes your breath away. If you don’t fancy the site, go there and try and park up. We did a few years ago. Hope you have a great time werever you end up.
Was up there in March and half the beach was covered in snow.
Like you say stunning scenery

Was up there at end of July and tried to do as much as possible despite the fact I was meant to be working.
If round Lough Ness, Dores was OK but we found a Hotel/pub called Craigdarroch half way down the lough with great views overlooking it. Below the actual hotel there was a campsite that looked like it took motor homes and was right down at waters edge. Looked fairly busy though.
Of course Applecross is one to see but you wouldnt be able to take the camper van up that road.
Slightly off peak season has to be the best bet otherwise you will be stop start constantly into passing places on many roads

Sutherland is quiet and stunning and vast.
Yes the west is really scenic but there's beautiful scenery on the East as well.
Up to Caithness from Inverness is a nice drive as well with some lovely villages along the way
I’m living on the East now, with my hair, which proves your point conclusively.

And there’s also nice scenery, lovely towns, and well, lots lots more.

So many castles, Dovecots of ancient provenance, beaches without annoying cunts. It’s great.

.Midges can be bad but to keep it on perspective they don't fly in the wind or in bright sun.
Wind is very common in Scotland and we even get bright sun occasionally.
Both coasts are worth visiting. West coast is more spectacular but East is very attractive as well.

If you have the whole year don't miss out on Dumfries and Galloway or the Borders.
Would also recommend Arran and Bute in the Firth of Clyde and the Cowal and Kintyre peninsulas which are less visited.

This thread has me thinking.......I was never one for the touring thing but living round here and seeing the huge increase of campers plus the large amounts for sale at good prices on the second hand market coupled with the few TV programme on it, there must be a lot of mileage in it, no pun intended......The thought of packing up, basically fucking off and waking in a different place is starting to appeal. Plus the revenge I can meter out to normal road users fills me with a sense of sadistic pleasure.

Dornoch is lovely and spent a very nice night there on our NC500 trip. Added to that a tour of the Glenmorangie distillery that’s there as well made it well worth the visit.

ric kindly removed the original thread.

it is decided that we will be going to scotland for a year or so in her mobile home.
the plan is to work our way further and further north, bit by bit, in no particular hurry, taking in the highlands and islands.

the idea is to avoid people, cities, etc as much as possible and spend as much time in the wilderness as we can.
remote pubs being the ultimate bonus.

if anyone has any personal experience of doing this sort of thing and/or can provide internet links to such places we'd be extremely grateful.

cheers, blues x
Assuming you intend to spend every night somewhere where you've got appropriate facilities (ie toilets) immediately to hand then I hope you have a wonderful time.

If you intend to park up (or "wildcamp" as they laughingly call it) in very remote lay-bys and car parks where there are no facilities, resulting in you pissing and defecating in the nearest bushes (or emptying your chemical toilet in said bushes) as a large proportion of motorhomers and vanlifers choose to do... then you're absolute scum.

Good point, I see them on my daily travels and tbf to most, there are a minority of real twats out there dumping rubbish and the like over walls, in fields with livestock or just plainly in the open, pisses me right off.

In my experience (I live in a relatively remote coastal location) its not a small minority, a large proportion of motorhomers and vanlifers choose to "wildcamp" in spots where there are no facilities.

A woodland carpark near me can often have half a dozen motorhomes parked up in it overnight even though there are spacies available at nearby camp sites.
