Trade Union membership

The one I dealt with was nothing of the kind.

And the reason I had to consult him was because local management fooked up on a big scale (bad advice re a job reallocation exercise). He knew his stuff and as soon he played a part the Regional Management team capitulated within hours.

I think you are right in that they should be part of a system of checks and balances against poor employers but there are some serious hypocrites who don't give a toss about the employers (like BA) and that doesn't help the workers in the long term

Before the intervention of our regional rep the regional management team were desperately trying to cover up the failings of our local management.

And this is Central Government.

Investors in People my arse.

Sharon, I agree the Trade Union as a concept is very important and has a significant role to play in the workplace. However, I could never fall in behind the likes of Bob Crow and most of the other leaders at that level.

It would make me ill if I felt I was contributing to his wage.

The workplace representatives are much more useful and effective.

Was in one when i was younger and found them to be a total waste of time and practically useless.
Was made redundant at one company back in the 90's, after working there 7 years, but was told that there was 6 months work at one of their sites down south if i wanted it. Did the 6 months and the site manager told me he had another 6 months more work for me.
Went back to the company HR dept and asked them to rescind my redundancy. Got a big fat no for an answer.
Went to my local rep for help and he was clueless, so tried to get in touch with the NW area rep. Only after a number of phone calls and a couple of letters did he finally get in touch, then basically did nothing.
Decided enough was enough with both the company and the union, so took my redundancy payment and went contracting.
After a couple of years contracting i went back into a staff position, and looked to go back to my old union because the company i went to was a bit of a closed shop.
Got a letter off my old union asking for 2 years worth of back contributions for the time i was contracting before they would let me rejoin.
After that i wouldn't go any where near a union and even if they paid me i wouldn't join one.

Divide and rule is the bosses motto. Solidarity and Unity is the workers motto. Workers of the world unite and get rid of the fat cat bosses and bankers who leech off us every day.

LOL

Genuine question... can you join a union & opt out of any of your money going towards the Labour party?

Yep just tick the box the stops Perty contribrutions.

Joining a union is the best workplace insurance policy you can get. Love them or hate them the workplace would be a worse place without them.
NO ONE wants to go on strike and before a strike theres loads of discussion about resolving the issues. Most of which the general public don't get to hear about
