Trade Union membership

try getting a union in a small company (50 - 100 person workforce)

and see what happens.

If you can get more than 50% to join the same one then it has to be recognised by the employer, I think.
A general union like Unison should be able to help.

it's getting the first lot in - there is usually a real fear for their jobs

getting 50% isn't possible at some of these mickey mouse places.

Employers are not allowed to descriminate because of union membership by law. A strong recruitment campaign after a few meetings after work should spread the word.
The TUC can offer advice too.

union membership is a waste of money
UNTIL YOU NEED IT
Not all companies play by the rules, and treating staff with contempt has been the way to do business since the witch destroyed manufacturing etc
heavily biased to the employer they may be,but there are legal obligations and procedures they should follow(mainly from the much-maligned EU) and as an individual you are easy meat for an unscrupulous employer.
The strongest unions are the ones that shun publicity like the barristers, the dentists cartel the opticians cartel, big pharma, and all the other cartels that rip off britain's public. Unions in all but name.
Despite murdoch and the mail, belonging to a union is not being part of a communist plot,it's a survival mechanism in this deeply divided and increasingly hopeless island

This is when Solidarity is needed. Easier said than done though.

exactly my point

some places are run in such a way that it is near impossible to introduce it

the staff turnover is so massive that they would be bankrupt within the year..
