The pay and conditions for workers are as good as they are now because the unions fought for them in the past.

The modern, selfish, 'McDonalds Instant Gratification' worker does not see the need to personally contribute to the solidarity that strengthens the union but expects them to provide all their needs, tailored to their own specific desires. Then the union loses their membership because it did not fulfil all their wishes.

Thus the power of the union is lessened. The Government also seeks to do everything it can to make things more difficult for unions to be effective.

Bring back the Closed Shop.

Could that have something to do with their attempt to bring down democratically elected governments? I am afraid they shot themselves in the foot when they tried that, and since their defeat in their last attempt (the miners strike) they have been consigned to irrelevance

No union has ever tried to bring down a government and to make such moronic claims is to distort history to a stupidly right wing agenda.

Collective bargaining, friendly societies and the like are all good stuff.

It's when political power enters the fray a monster is created.

Public Sector Unions should not exist. It's wrong that they can withhold services from the people who are forced to pay for them. These groups hold to ransom their own customers (if you can class a taxpayer as a customer, that is. Customers can usually withhold their custom if they so choose...)

When we think of a similar scenario in the private sector it's the Mafia that instantly springs to mind.

what a tit!

-- Sun Jun 19, 2011 3:02 pm --

Yes they have, the first miners strike and second miners strike were direct attempts to bring down democratically elected governments, you could also argue that the winter of discontent was also an attempt which backfired.

You really need to go into the background of the some of the Union leaders in the 70's and 80's they had no interest in the membership more in changing the form of government

Miners strike in 1973/74 brought down Heaths Goverment.

What a preposterous thing to say. It is you who is trying to distort history.

The Miners Union Brought down Ted Heath's government in 1974 with thinly veiled political opportunitism on the agenda.

That spawned Thatcherism. The union movement reaped what it had sowed.

Unions, some Unions, do great work.

I was a member of a Union up until 12 years ago and, with the help of the company i worked for, we set up learning platforms for staff. From simple I.T courses to poetry. All very well received by the staff and the company who allowed time off etc and help me set up a learning zone with 4 pc's and t'internet connections.

Come pay negs though and they were as much use as a chocolate fireguard. Sat at the table and demanded an 8% pay rise and wouldn't budge. Wankers. We got fuck all that year.

My trouble these days with Unions is this...the big huge ones that seem to be stuck in the past like the railway workers one are not acting fully for their members. There is a political agenda hidden in there (sometimes not hidden very well) which is not agreed by their members.

Those ones belong in the past and really need to move on. Bob Crow and his mates mostly do it for their own gain.
